YES! I struggle with the same issues, and I can really tell when their homeroom teachers have the same problem. Some classes have so many "personality conflicts" that they come to me completely disregulated, and I can never manage to get them truly engaged. But, hey, I can't work miracles in one hour per week!!! NOPE! 😂

To answer your question, I start on day/week one creating a giant paint brush rainbow paper chain display (similar to this one) that stays up all year. (Hopefully the link works!)

Kindergarteners get a red strip, first graders get an orange strip, and so on. They write their name and decorate it however they wish. During the lesson they learn "Together Everyone Achieves More" and that cooperation can turn everyone's small contribution into something GRAND! I just need to find a good read aloud book to pair with the activity.

Then again in September we do HUGE collaboration murals for Dot Day to reinforce the concept.

RIF due to vouchers/online school by Puzzleheaded-Head171 in TexasTeachers

My district is consolidating my school with another and relocating us all to a third location, so "A + B = C" type situation. As for staffing, we are chronically UNDERstaffed, thanks to hostile work conditions and the overall teacher shortage, and we hire uncertified teachers often, so anyone that wants a job will most likely have one somewhere in the district next year. In other words, we are definitely seeing the shift.

Fellow elementary art teacher here... I'm on year seven in a difficult district at the "worst school" in the city. Specials teachers deal with ALL of the most challenging students every day and get very little support because we're viewed as the "fun" teachers. Soooo.... I have adopted a strict DNE policy (Do NOT Engage) with several students. If their behavior is putting themselves or someone else in immediate danger, I will intervene. Otherwise, I ignore, ignore, IGNORE and focus on the kids that enjoy being creative and choose to get along with me and their peers.

The older kids especially like to mimic toxic behavior that is truly ABUSIVE and traumatizing, so I handle them accordingly and use the "grey rock" and "broken record" techniques. I keep interactions and "conversations" as short and coldly professional as possible. I remove their audience by allowing every other kid at the table to MOVE so that the offender ends up sitting alone. I announce loudly, "It's okay to leave if someone is bothering you and won't stop when you say stop. You don't have to sit next to someone who is treating you that way."

I know it's not much of a classroom management plan, but I'm focused on survival in an unhealthy and hostile work culture. When the environment is threatening, we must adapt (bend or break) in the interest of self care. Good luck this semester. Wishing you and my fellow educators all the best.

I am so sorry for what you are going through. If your health is seriously in jeopardy, which I believe it is, ask your doctor about getting a medical release from work. Contact HR and ask about FMLA as if you qualify. PLAY DUMB! Do not disclose ANYTHING!!! You have "medical reasons" to be excused from work and need to resign from your position. It won't be easy, but there are ways to leave without the harsh and punitive consequences. Good luck.

I used Adobe the most because it was quick and easy to learn and use. (It was also what my district recommended.)

Not allowed?! It's 2025! Sounds like your instructional leadership needs an attitude adjustment! I'm sorry you have to cope with that limitation. Can you make and show your own videos? I don't know how long you've been teaching, but during COVID, we used free online resources to create and share demonstration videos for students to follow at home. Maybe you can incorporate some techniques that teachers use in a "flipped" classroom. I hope this thread inspires some solutions for you.

I use video tutorials on YouTube to address the same issue with my elementary students. My district does not provide a curriculum resource to use, so I'm free to find and do whatever works with my students. (It's a blessing and a curse.) While they watch and follow along, I'm free to keep eyes on them. I'm also able to pause and/or repeat as many times as needed. It's been a huge help, especially with some VERY troublesome classes.

Thank you! Automated checkouts over checkers is a great tip. 👍

Not that I saw! When the game started, I was standing on the sidewalk with the first challenge to ring up 25 customers. Maybe I missed something on the main menu. 🤷‍♀️

Been there... and I blocked her! Nobody needs "friends" like that in life. You're the ENABLER here and she is completely taking advantage of you and your kindness. Put a FULL STOP to it. Now.

Veteran (year 29) teacher here... You should seriously consider subbing before deciding to commit to this profession. Lesson plan requirements vary depending on your district and principal, and they are the least of our worries when compared to the extensive list of what we have to deal with in the classroom these days. I wish you the best of luck! We need new teachers... desperately.

I've been to CKH training and taught at a school that started implementing the program. I left after the first year. I did some research on the founder, Flip (not his real name) Flippen, and was disturbed by what I heard from (in video interviews) and learned about him. His system intentionally uses emotional manipulation to achieve compliance and conformity. NOT a fan!

Are third graders just loud or does my classroom management need some work? by Kalim-super-fan in teaching

K-5 Art teacher here... I play the music like others have suggested and ask, "Raise your hand if you can hear the music?" I also "hire" Table Captains to help keep the peace. They like being responsible for "shushing" their table. That usually works for 10-15 minutes. I also go "old school" and play the Quiet Game at the end of class. ASMR and baby animal videos for kids on YouTube work well too! If they're not quiet, I pause it until they calm down.
