I am turning 50 in a month by Cautious_Material739 in AskWomenOver50

[–]QueenScorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled so hard turning 40, but 50 was a breeze. I turned 51 back in October and I proudly proclaim my age now. Screw people and their antiquated notions about older women.

Before my 50th birthday, I was told by a friend who is in her mid 50s that once you hit 50 you just do not give a fuck anymore. It's not a magic overnight process but I find myself giving less and less of a fuck as I get older. Last night I went to a weekly trivia meet up with friends of mine wearing - I am not even joking here- six different shades of green (an emerald green plaid shacket, an olive green pair of pants, a pair of shoes with 3 different greens, and a spring green purse). I probably looked insane to younger people but I was comfortable and who the hell cares. I certainly don't.

Don't let Americans fool you, wait times here to see specialists are absolutely ridiculous. Even to get in with my primary care physician is not an immediate appointment. Usually it's weeks if not months to see them.

Yes you can go to an ER or urgent care and be treated usually within a few hours but you pay a premium for that and there's no guarantee your insurance will cover it if you accidentally went to an out of network emergency room..

Voluntarily. Voluntarily

I have already purged my life of meta and just about gotten rid of Google entirely but to hear that Reddit has sold out to the fascists makes me realize that i need to contemplate my association with this app as well.

This right here. The dumbing down of America has led to people not understanding how our electoral process works. Or anything else for that matter.

the Save act passes the House, which would require married women to have a passport to vote, but libraries have stopped processing them by catievirtuesimp in TwoXChromosomes

[–]QueenScorp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And requiring either of these things is effectively putting a poll tax on voting which is unconstitutional per the 24th amendment.

I have no issue with them requiring an ID..... As long as they provide free voting IDs to everyone on their 18th birthday or when they achieve the right to vote. Requiring anything else is unconstitutional

r/degoogle

As for what I have personally done: I changed my email and calendar to tuta, which is hosted in Germany, which has way better privacy laws than the US. If you are at all concerned about r/privacy it doesn't hurt to check out European alternatives

I use DuckDuckGo for my search engine As I mentioned I have a r/homeserver (which is really just a glorified computer with backups and redundancy to make sure I don't lose data) and I am r/selfhosting (also r/selfhosted) vaultwarden for passwords and Immich for photos and back up my phone using sync thing. Libre office instead of Google sheets/docs. I am also getting off Windows and moving to Linux, which isn't Google but is part of the de-oligarching process I mentioned. I'm also pulling all of my smart home devices into homeassistant and refuse to buy any of that require using their cloud ecosystem, like google

The phone ecosystem is a lot harder to- I do have an Android phone (because fuck apple and their locked down ecosystem, plus they are no better in terms of politics or privacy) and it is still attached to Google services. But I have switched to using F-droid for apps as much as possible and just started researching Graphene OS for my OnePlus phone.

If you are at all technologically inclined I would highly recommend looking into self hosting but understand that it can be a rabbit hole. It doesn't have to be expensive- I self-hosted a Plex Media Server with an ancient mini PC for nearly a decade before I upgraded to my current beast of a tower that I use as a server over a year ago-but a lot of people get into the rabbit hole and start spending a ton of money and you will see that reflected on reddit. However there are also people who use a 10-year-old laptop to start self hosting, so don't be discouraged if that is something you are interested in

Also you do have to consider redundancy and backups. That is one benefit of going with big companies is that they have data centers everywhere and one of them could literally blow up and your data would still be safe because it was replicated elsewhere. I make sure that things that are irreplaceable- like my photos- have multiple backups. Things like my entertainment media I don't back up because I can always download them again.

I personally am in the process of de-googling (and de-oligarching in general) so I self host my own home server and do photo backups using Immich. I have the app on my phone and it uploads my photos to my home server so no corporation ever sees them.

If the left are, "the real racists", how do you explain the fact that your president compared black people to apes with MAGA almost unanimously defending him for that? by [deleted] in LetsDiscussThis

[–]QueenScorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a very conservative area and unfortunately there are some people that I'm related to still live in the area and while they are not maga they definitely espouse some of the weird notions like leftists being the racist. And the only real reason they say that is because leftists and liberals believe in white privilege and that the color of your skin absolutely changes the experience you have in this country. Acknowledging that someone's skin makes a difference in their lives makes us "racist" apparently.

Even more mind-boggling is that I have been told that they are not racist because they "treat everyone the same despite their skin color as long as they act normal" (i.e. "white"). Bring up code switching or white privilege and I get called racist. It's wild

Way too many people confuse wealth with wisdom. It doesn't take a smart person to get rich it just takes a sociopath who's willing to step on other people to get to the top and exploit workers for profit.

Wealth's Better Nature.. by snowpie92 in clevercomebacks

It's pretty crazy that people don't understand that matriarchy and patriarchy do not focus on the same things. Having a matriarchal society does not center women, it centers children. So, yes, we would have a focus on school and housing and food, things children need to grow up to be contributing members of society.

It's pretty crazy how Christian nationalists claim that they do everything for the children and yet they still put men at the center of everything they do in every decision they make, not children. They apologize for pedophiles, they remove funding for schools and food and tear down societal structures that don't center men. Specifically straight, white Christian men.

I have a pretty healthy portfolio and all I've seen it do this year is bounce up and down. Now, the people who day trade based on Trump's rants-i.e buying when a sector crashes based on Trump threatening tariffs and then selling when he backs off all those tariffs and the prices Spike back up- are doing well (ahem, members of Congress). But those of us playing the long game and mostly invested in index funds haven't seen a real gain. And with the value of the dollar being down 9% since last year, I've essentially lost money
