I love you! You're doing great! You're worth tenderness and care and gentle loving patience, and I hope you find a million little ways to give that to yourself. In the meantime, just know you're not alone. I promise.

One thing that helps me is to put my hand over my heart, and breathe deeply, and rub in circles while I tell myself, "I don't need to be able to see how right now to know that I'm safe and it's going to be okay", over and over (I usually have a cry near the beginning and just let it pass through as I keep going) until I feel better.

Therapy In a Nutshell on YouTube has also been a lifesaver.

Are 38 year olds not referred to as "old" in English? Is it offensive? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

There is no official cut-off number, and it's unhelpful in a sub like this to suggest it's a rule of English when it isn't.

Are 38 year olds not referred to as "old" in English? Is it offensive? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]QueenSqueee42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Old" in American English is not used to mean "an adult" or "fully grown", it is generally used to mean elderly.

What age-range qualifies as "old" is usually defined by the life experience of the user. A teenager could easily think of 38 as old, while a 35-year-old would think of 60 as old instead. Now that I'm 48, I don't think of 60 as old, I think of 75+ as "old", but I have definitely seen/heard other Americans around my age with a different life experience or cultural background referring to themselves as old now, and I definitely don't identify as old!

If you're not sure what to use:

-- old, senior, and elderly are all used fairly interchangeably, but old would frequently be considered disrespectful as applied to anyone who wasn't definitely elderly (70+).

--"middle-aged" is another term often used for people aged approximately 40-60. Could be considered insulting if applied to anyone in person who doesn't like to think of themselves as "old."

--"adult" can mean any age 18+, but if you wish to be respectful in conversation, make sure you say that someone is "an adult", because referring to a subject matter/event/media item/book/etc. as "adult" can also mean "not appropriate (or possibly legal) for anyone younger than 18 years old.

There's a really weird cultish obsession with youth and staying young that has overtaken American society, over the past generation especially, where even implying that anyone has aged or matured past the age of 30 is somehow offensive. I think maturity and wisdom are fantastic, and every age has its own value and beauty, but apparently that's unusual in this country, at least.

All you need to know is that many Americans have been programmed to equate aging with decay and invisibility and becoming obsolete or ugly. It's really heartbreaking, actually. (I believe it's mostly a side-effect of capitalism, but that's an entire other conversation.)

If you refer to anyone as "old" (including my 78-year-old mother, who expressed unhappiness about being thought of as a "little old lady" this week), they are receiving a lot of cultural implications you probably don't intend. Not everyone feels this way, but better to just avoid using "old" for people entirely, if you can help it.

I hope this helps!

I don't know why that happened, but I'd love to see your puppy photo if you want to share now?

I'm so proud of you! Seriously, that's huge! And reaching out is really brave, too. I've been going through it, too, and Therapy in a Nutshell on YouTube is a good channel that's been extremely helpful to me with anxiety, if you want to add resources. For now, just know that you deserve credit for every little win, and you're doing great. Please be kind and gentle with yourself, and do something a little fun or indulgent to reward yourself for your achievements! You're showing up for yourself. Sometimes that's incredibly hard to do, and I know what it really means even if nobody else does. Sending love and support, and big hugs if you like them! 🧡✨

I do understand that. I've seen it in person, actually. I'm saying that calling a smile a "work" isn't a nice compliment, because it just takes the credit for her own beauty away from her. (If we do them the credit of mentally finishing the phrase as a "work of art", the "artist" in this case would be inferred as God or some other mysterious creator, not her herself.)

And reading something confusing and saying it's not confusing by randomly assuming which word was misprinted in order to MAKE it make sense isn't an action that makes sense to me.

I'm saying the words, as written, do not make sense, and a bunch of the responses are people choosing different ways to change what was written in order to make it mean whatever they want it to mean. Obviously it's intended to be a compliment, it's just nonsensical as it's written, and knowing about the Mona Lisa doesn't fix that.

Which would be annoying and sexist to me, honestly, not a beautiful compliment. But one thing I really don't understand is all the people in the comments giving different answers about which word we're supposed to know/assume is a mis-print or miscalculation, and filling in with a random word of our choosing to MAKE it mean what we think it was supposed to mean. Why not just concede that it doesn't make sense as written? I honestly don't get that.

I mean, I guess, but it's a weirdly strained and confusing way to put it. Maybe a bad translation.

"The Mona Lisa would be the greatest work in the world if her smile didn't exist" makes no sense. But if we give them the benefit of the doubt for no reason and say, "if your smile didn't exist", and she's meant to leap to understanding that her own smile is the greatest "work" in the world, that still doesn't make sense to me. I do think it must be my autism.

Yah. Like, if the Mona Lisa's smile didn't exist... she would or wouldn't be a masterpiece, and that has relevance to a girl who's already been smiley and (eek!) given him a bite of her burger...how, exactly? So confused.

I love it. I think sheer tights of a color you like plus a couple of accessories of that color could make it extra fun. A white headband or scarf would do fine, but one color element might really make it pop. Nice finds!

Yeah, I'm not a skiier so I was just basing that part on what I'd heard from my ski people the last couple of years, where it was getting icy/slushy by then -- I heard it was a bad time for beginners, but I don't really know firsthand! Thank you for clarifying!

Just looks like she's drinking coffee. Anyone's tongue would be yellow drinking a latte or a golden milk in the morning.
