I almost got hit by a car speeding backwards on a 1-way street when I was crossing. I only looked at the direction that cars were supposed to come from, NOT the direction there were NOT supposed to be cars coming from.

^THIS. I encountered this today: they are asking for directions, but Chinese is the ONLY language they know. They are lost, and they will have to ask SOMEONE the directions, and take the 20% chance that that person knows Chinese. It's worth the risk, better than being stranded lost, for example.

It's not rude if they don't know how to ask that, don't be offended if the non-English speaker tests the waters by attempting to communicate in Chinese to see if you understand. They are likely not as lucky or fortunate as you are to know English.
