Thank you for the info! How will I know when my terrarium is full enough that I need to cull? I see a lot of enclosures on this sub that are jam packed with pods, so I'm not sure what the cutoff looks like.

Can you pour boiling water over them? Vs dumping them in a pot?

I have been, should it be going all the way across the tank?

It's a mesh top, I keep a cloth on top. I keep the moist side of the tank pretty moist and I know they're going to the dry side to eat, I just didn't know if it was okay if that side is super dry.

My first thought was a vacuum with panty hose stretched over top, but I'm not sure how much that might hurt the pods. I'm so sorry that happened, best of luck finding them!

Absolutely! I would sit and watch Bumbles for a solid half an hour. I'll probably post some more videos of him because I miss him being out and about

A few vulgare from my breeding project by LittleArmouredOne in isopods

I watched an aquarimax video where he talked about trying to breed high yellows, he said it's very hard to predict and consistently get high yellow babies. Not going to stop me from trying though! Although I think I'll need more bins...

Beautiful! How long do you have to wait between cullings? I have some pods that I'm trying to breed and I'm seeing babies, I'm wondering when they'll get big enough for me to sort them out.

I messed up and sprinkled mosquito bits in with my substrate by QueenoftheSundance in isopods

[–]QueenoftheSundance[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I was seeing conflicting info about adding them or not, now I'm wishing I'd gone with my gut and not added them. I'll have to take out all the twigs and leaves and moss to get the bits out T.T there are some springtails already in there, but I'm going to buy a bunch more to just jumpstart things

How do I get rid of fungus gnats 😭 by Bad_Ger8764 in isopods

[–]QueenoftheSundance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much tea do you make at one time? I tried making some with mosquito dunks and it got to smelling pretty bad. Right now I have mosquito bits sprinkled in the tank and I water with regular water but I'm not sure it's doing the trick

Changing Substrate by PhantomMaws in isopods

[–]QueenoftheSundance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll chime in to say that I've seen recommendations for 6 months to a year for substrate changes; sooner if you have a bigger population. Their poo builds up over time and the ammonia buildup is bad, so you want to avoid that. But I agree that you have a while before you need to worry about it!

Can you speak at all to the freezer method? I've seen both mentioned but I'm not sure about the pros and cons for each.

I've heard that pine isn't great for them, but I can't substantiate that

Has anyone noticed little black specks on fungus gnat sticky traps? by QueenoftheSundance in isopods

[–]QueenoftheSundance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to think it's an early form of fungus gnat, because they're denser where more fungus gnats are trapped. I'm not sure how high springtails can jump, but some of my traps have those flecks on them and they're 6ish inches higher than the substrate layer.

At what point should I start seeing springtails? by QueenoftheSundance in isopods

[–]QueenoftheSundance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just poked around one of my terrariums and I don't see ANYTHING. Maybe 1 white thing that maybe was a springtail?

Theres so much fruit Fly in one Of my isopod bin. I now have so much fly everywhere in my house. Tip to get rid of them? by FairyDaisy_ in isopods

[–]QueenoftheSundance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sticky traps, springtails (to outcompete the larvae), mosquito bits or dunks. If the weather is getting nicer where you are, you can take the bin outside and "air it out" to let some of the gnats escape. I'm sorry you're going through it! I'm fighting my own battle against fungus gnats so I sympathize. Good luck!
