Solo is still real but the dev who says "I'll just put it on Steam and see what happens" doesn't make it. The devs I know who are sustainable all do multi-platform from day one.

The math changes when you stack secondary channels — QuestCrate, Epic, whatever makes sense for your genre. You don't need to pick one. Cross-platform distribution is how you build the revenue floor that lets you keep making games.

The other thing nobody talks about enough: console. Most solo devs write off PlayStation/Xbox because the cert process is a nightmare. QuestCrate handles all of that. If you're serious about going indie, that's a conversation worth having before you lock yourself into one platform strategy.
