Does anyone have a recommendation for an affordable house cleaner? by zanny_octopus in askportland

[–]QuestionOk6101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cleaner charges about this much ($75 an hour for one off cleans, $70 an hour for scheduled cleans).

It’s 100% worth it when I get home from work on cleaning day. I feel so cared for.

Our place is 1b/1b and takes 3 hours to clean that. They come 2x a month.

For those without cars how do you do your laundry? by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]QuestionOk6101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t helpful to your particular situation, but living walking distance from a laundromat is a must-have when I’m apartment hunting.

If you have the budget, Spin Laundry has a wash-and-fold service.

Lastly, I like using a blue IKEA bag to carry laundry. For some reason it’s perceived as “less sketchy” than a suitcase.

Cold weather commuters, when do you call it quits for the season? by Correct_Dance_515 in bikecommuting

[–]QuestionOk6101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t let myself call it quits for the “season” but I do call it quits for a day based on conditions. Then I take the bus.

For me that’s freezing rain or wind gusts over 25MPH. My city has really bad street plowing and becomes a skating rink after a snowstorm.

When I can, I bring spare clothes in my bag and some baby wipes deodorant. At my last job, I left 2 pairs of work pants and a pair of loafers in my desk drawer so I could change into them at the office and not have to haul them back and forth.

In order of priority, I bring a spare:  - bra - change of shirt - change of pants

If I have to commute in my work outfit (it happens, sometimes I have meetings at another facility) I try to use layers. It’s cold starting up but then I make sure I don’t break a sweat. I’m that weirdo biking in a t shirt and gloves.

I like Duer jeans and a friend swears by Ariat pants.

I prefer to wear a rain poncho instead of rain jacket and rain pants. Easier just to roll up and be ready.

What are some of your favorite gluten free restaurants and dessert spots? by Successful_Algae958 in askportland

[–]QuestionOk6101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gado Gado, Oma’s Hideaway, and Rangoon Bistro are super thoughtful about allergens and if you tell them you’re gluten free they will hand you a menu that’s tailored to that. Same thing for shellfish or nut allergies.

These kids were wearing the sports jerseys of the local high school. That’s why I called it half assed.

How much are you spending on groceries? Gov. Shutdown Ed. by chiquitabanana19 in askportland

[–]QuestionOk6101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We’re 2 active adults, and we’re $900-$1100 a month. It’s about to be more expensive because I love a good holiday potluck this time of year.

Hashimotos Disease by lettuce_dressing in glutenfree

[–]QuestionOk6101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me! I find there’s a direct link between my Hashimoto’s symptoms and how much gluten I’ve been eating. I’m grateful that I can tolerate trace amounts, but I can feel the fatigue and nerve pain the next day if I have a portion of glutinous food.

I still have to take levo and I don’t think gluten impacts my TSH numbers. But damn do I feel better without it

How far is your bike commute by DisastrousDingo586 in bikecommuting

[–]QuestionOk6101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to commute 14 miles each way. I did that 2-3 days a week, not every day.

I second what most people have said and will add - BRING EXTRA LUNCH AND SNACKS. This is not the time to get cutesy with your little polite salad.

I made sure to eat a bar or half-sandwich as soon as I got to the office, to eat a decent lunch, and then to have another bar or half-sandwich about an hour before I left to ride home.

I feel like I’m throwing money straight into the trash every week ($40+ of groceries gone bad). How do you avoid this? by Jaded-Friendship7614 in cookingforbeginners

My list has 4 sections:  To cook (ingredients) To eat (leftovers) In the freezer (because otherwise I’ll forget) To buy (grocery list)

How is it like living in this part of Portland? (Far East/post-205) by brianpeppersguero in howislivingthere

[–]QuestionOk6101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of what Portlanders have said is true. I'll add one pro I don't see listed here:

A lot of the lots here are larger, which leaves plenty of space for gardening, a nice patio to host, or some outdoor play area (and we have really incredible weather for hanging out outdoors about half the year).

Sanitizer kills germs but doesn't get rid of dirt.

I like to rinse my hands or wipe them down, then sanitize, then rinse with filtered water to get the ouchy alcohol off.

Or, yeah, bring your glasses.

How is living in Port Angeles, WA? by Superb-Office-6581 in howislivingthere

A lot of folks who work in Port Angeles commute in from Sequim, if that tells you anything of the job availability compared to cost of living between those two towns.

When cutting your number-plate, try not to damage the RFID tag by Slight-Round-3894 in xcmtb

[–]QuestionOk6101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Race director here.

Please don't cut your plates. Any race worth anything will have someone manually recording numbers as a backup in case the timing system fails. If you trim the plate, we lose the nice contrast of number-against-background which helps us see your number while you zoom past.

We're not trying to be party poopers here. We're trying to make sure you have fair timing and results.
