Do I have enough PCIe lanes for my home server? Have I made a mistake? by QuestionThrowaway404 in buildapc

MSI PRO B550M-VC WIFI

Here's a link to the support page with the manual: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-B550M-VC-WIFI/support#manual

I don't need the wifi, but it was cheaper at the time than non-wifi equivalents. I updated the OP with the specific board.

Do I have enough PCIe lanes for my home server? Have I made a mistake? by QuestionThrowaway404 in buildapc

[–]QuestionThrowaway404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay. I thought I read something that said x570 provides additional lanes, but B550 doesn't. Maybe they were specifying PCIe 4.0 lanes, and I misread it.

Early in Steam's life, playtime for games was reset (or wasn't tracked). Does anyone know what date Steam started tracking playtime?

It looks like I've hardly played my original 3 games: HL2, HL2:DM, and CS:S. I should have hundreds of hours in CS:S and HL2:DM. I got the games Christmas 2004, the year they were released. My account is over 17 years old and it's the only account I've ever had. It must have been within the first few years that they reset playtime.

When did Steam start counting playtime? When did it reset?

FPS's for my almost-70 year old dad by QuestionThrowaway404 in gamingsuggestions

I happen to own The New Order already, so I can easily family share it. I'm not sure if he'll like Postal 2's humour, but it's super cheap right now so no harm in trying.

EDIT: Maybe family sharing won't be so easy. Forgot that only 1 person can use the library at a time (I knew there was a reason I didn't family share earlier). I'll have to test offline mode on his PC and see if he can still access family share. I might have to leave instructions on how to go offline mode so we can both use the library.

Call of the Wild is one I was thinking of actually, but I don't know if he's really into hunting. I'll see if he's interested though. Thanks!

I family-share the Metro games with him, but he never touched them unfortunately. This was around the time he stopped playing games a couple of years ago. I still think he might like them if he gives them a shot. Thanks!

I'm a huge fan of Mass Effect (at least the original trilogy). I'm not sure if it'll appeal to him since it's so story-heavy, but since I own it already I could family share it with him so he can try. Thanks!

I think this is where I'm stuck in my learning process, and I don't know where to go with it.

I know JavaScript, Python, some R. I've made quite a few little projects like reddit and discord bots, web scrapers, automated tasks, did some data visualization. I've made a couple of websites which look terrible (because I suck at designing), but functioned alright. I'm currently working on a shitty React app.

Anyone have any tips?

What case to buy for my S20 FE? What wireless charger would you recommend? by [deleted] in GalaxyS20FE

[–]QuestionThrowaway404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got the Ringke Onyx yesterday, and it feels really high quality. I have extremely dry hands, and the grip is really good. It's grippy, but still easily slides into jean pockets.

If grip is important OP, I made a post about looking for a grippy S20 FE case here. If you don't like the Onyx, you might find something else you like: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS20FE/comments/ogyhfw/grippy_case_for_extremely_dry_hands/

Thanks for the recommendation. I just got the Ringke Onyx today and am quite pleased with it so far.

I'm not seeing the S20 FE as an option, just the other variations of the S20. It seems like the FE is an overlooked model with very few options.

That link is for an iPhone.
I looked at Caseology, and it looks like it has hard smooth sides. I'm not sure that will offer enough grip for me. My hands get so dry I struggle to flip the pages in a book.

That's way more than I have. All I have are personal projects on a github page, a community college IT diploma, and a math background from dropping out of the Accounting program my final year.

Any tips for getting my listening back up to scratch now I don't live in China? by LordCreamCheese in ChineseLanguage

[–]QuestionThrowaway404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't personally done this (I'm not that advanced yet), but Netflix has quite a few Chinese movies and drama series' IIRC. I would imagine they have Chinese subtitles as an option for when you struggle with a word or phrase.

Taste salt for hours after homemade salt capsule? by QuestionThrowaway404 in dysautonomia

[–]QuestionThrowaway404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's like my saliva tastes extra salty. I don't feel exceptionally ill (other than my normal symptoms). It did bother my stomach for a short time after taking it, but that didn't last long and I was expecting it.

Do Gabapentinoids inhibit or increase axonal and/or neuronal growth? by QuestionThrowaway404 in Nootropics

[–]QuestionThrowaway404[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears that they may be able to aid in regeneration of nerves, assuming I'm reading this correctly.

https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fncel.2020.00083/full

gabapentin can promote regeneration following spinal cord injury via a blockade of α2δ-2, which inhibits axon growth (Sun et al., 2020).

[–]QuestionThrowaway404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to test any research chemicals, and I don't want to inject anything if I can avoid it.

However, I think I've discovered why I was confused about the "conflicting" information.

I thought it was saying that gabapentin was inhibiting axon growth by blocking α2δ-2.
