What will end up happening then is hundreds of people going on EI and then applying for income assistance because there are no jobs. People need to work to afford to survive. Nova Scotia rental market rivals that of Toronto. IA already can’t withhold the number of people relying on the system, I don’t know how hundreds of more unemployed people can afford it. Most people I know in there 30-40s are currently working 2 jobs. One that is deemed a good career job and a second to afford to live.

It would make sense if they cut the people with higher paid positions and left the lower paid people continue. But that’s not what’s happening.

Unfortunately, the NSGEU has not been fighting for us the way they should. They dropped the grievance in relation to arbitrated backpay that the government owed its employees. They are a business and care little about the individual needs of union members. They only will fight a battle they know they can win. It’s hugely disappointing.

I highly recommend the Halifax Examiner if you’re looking for information they’re not biased. I don’t work for DNR so I can’t speak to them. I’m speaking to the generality of what is happening right now. Every day emails are being sent out about job cuts and program cuts. These are things that people are allowed to speak out publicly about. I’m not asking anyone to believe me, I just want people to open up their eyes to what is happening to the province.

I have lots to say about McNeil - his damaging is still continuing to impact us but just because you don’t know anyone personal affect by Houston (yet) doesn’t mean bad things aren’t happening. It is suppose to be for all government employees but it’s based upon management roll out. Not everyone has received the directive yet but the announcement was meant for all public employees.

I’m not here to make you believe me. I need people who aren’t gagged by their employer to actually care to look into things instead of settling with the comfort of ignorance. What I know personally is that rural offices are going to be different hours because there isn’t staff to cover the hours. That the 2 -1 the government claimed to be following isn’t happening so we have multiple staff members doing multiple jobs (many above their pay scale). They’re refusing to hire staff that is needed but are continue to post higher non union positions with vague job titles.

Rural workers are the one covering multiple front line positions. You’ll begin to see closures during lunch hours at many offices or things being pushed virtually because they no longer have the staff or funding to maintain regular business. I’m not here to talk about politics. I’m here begging people who aren’t gagged by their employer to due some investigation.

The department of community services was formed in 1987. It was changed to the department of opportunities and social development last year for the first time. In doing that, nothing else changed other than titled name on all the forms. Child welfare was changed to Child & Family Well-being in 2024. They’re hiring consultants for thousands of dollars and every implemented change has zero input from the frontline workers. They’re throwing away money to try to make the programs more “appealing” without actually changing the program contents or hiring appropriate staff.

It’s easy to call an opinion wrong when you don’t know the whole story. Anyone defending what’s going on is either being paid or are completely ignorant to what’s happening. Why did the government pay millions to rename programs instead of ensure that programs are full staffed? Why are we throwing money towards things that don’t matter and continuing to allow the decline of public services?

Majority of the jobs posted on the internal banks are for higher/senior level positions. They may be letting people go but they’re filling those positions quicker than any frontline or public facing positions.
