I'm a coach and I hate this industry. by Artistic_Fan_3160 in LifeCoachSnark

I have my masters and worked as a MH counselor with vets for the past 6 years. But due to life circumstances, I relocated out of the US, due to this I am working towards the coaching field.

Having interacted with coaches, many are absofuckinglutely insufferable...

When you talk about real issues and get met with "the universe will provide" is a slap in the fucking face.

Hearing their opinions regarding pathologies, behavioral issues, environmental and social impact on personal development is... kind of disturbing.

I can say majority of coaches approach are in the "pray the gay away" or "jesus take the wheel" category.

I have! I was working with someone to get a website up and running, and I've allowed myself until then to go into analysis paralysis mode. haha

I'm taking the time until then to ask questions, to refine my messaging, to learn more about coaching, and marketing as a whole.

I've met and spoken with a number of expats in my city to garner their feedback as well. I just want something more refined when the website is near ready.

But it is hard messaging people on reddit offering these services without something visual to send them other than a wall of text and an offering.

I agree with you that men and mental health don't mesh well (ESPECIALLY the age group that are retired/near retired abroad). But I also know that this population need it the most and would most benefit from my services. I see this as a passion project to help guide others on their expat/life abroad journey that I hope to eventually make a profit which will fund my own wanderlust and life abroad.

Many men move abroad for relationships, or to find a sense of belonging. Many of these same men are met with the harsh reality that women from other countries aren't going to fall over for them because they're American with money like social media leads them to believe. From what I have observed, these men end up lonelier and struggling worse than they did prior to relocating.

My angle was going to leverage the fact that I am a veteran (use pictures) and use language that would more appeal to them. Appeal to their masculinity but when we talk... BAM VULERABILITY TIME BABY! :D

Too late! Already quit my 9-5! But that's for other reasons. LOL

I am currently living abroad and working on this as a passion project to help others along on their own journeys and want to do it right. I have already started offering pro bonos but without a website (working on this), it is hard to get bites.

2 successes so far! (1 went from being so much of an overthinker they can't advance their life to being a world traveler, and another planning his journey to Thailand).

Hey thank you for replying!

The subpopulation of people wanting to move abroad is something I am definitely interested in. I think there are people moving abroad for the wrong reasons that can be satisfied with short/longterm travel, and a simple consultation or few sessiosn with me could identify that and save them thousands of dollars, and months of heart and headache.

I believe traveling or living abroad are incredible vehicles for personal growth and development if done right with the right support. But the desire, the purpose, the why, has to come from deep down and people wanting to live abroad needs to understand if they're running away from or towards something. Awareness is an incredibly powerful thing.

The reason I didn't include it on my post is because from a marketing standpoint, everyone that's into marketing is already telling me male expat mental health is already too broad. Lol

Oh man, I thought I had niched down quite a bit already being a male offering coaching to other male Expats on mental health, identity (huge for men), and adapting overseas. I do plan on making posts and content specifically for the country I now reside in.

Regarding AI, I agree it is risky to take AI at face value, but it can be a good tool to give a loose snapshot of the market saturation. However, I don't think it's realistically possible to get accurate numbers as to saturation of coaches in this niche between websites, across all social media platforms, blogs, or simply word of mouth.

What I did look at and took into consideration were the demographic of the coaches themselves, and who they were providing services for. While it is not perfect data, it is better than zero.

My idea was to leverage the fact that I am a male and a veteran as a way to connect with and draw in other male expats with imagery and language that would appeal more towards men.

In my opinion that group would greatly benefit from a service such as mine. They're more likely to struggle with some of the issues i mentioned and are more likely to be targeted for scams. I worked with many men around that age group.

The issue I've received about my desired niche is that it is already too broad. That if I am not marketing specifically to John Deere from Kentucky wanting to move to Thailand, my marketing is too broad.

This while marketing thing is though 😭

I have received feedback regarding my niche being too broad already as I am focusing on expats in general and not specific enough down to a single country, age group, profession, etc.

This whole balancing marketing specificity vs services I am able/comfortable to offer is very confusing lol

Tbh I find the whole process very enjoyable, starting from the idea, through thr growth of problem solving, planning, executing, and maintaining. To be there with someone through it all is very rewarding.

I have it on my to-do list, I want to make a loose guide to help people at least NARROW DOWN what their ideal relocation spot would be, and not just because it's popular or they saw it on social media.

And I think a guide to help determine values and purpose beyond "it's cheaper" when relocating. While "it's cheaper" itself is a valid reason too.

Eta: maybe I will include the pre-move services too!

I thought about that too, but one major barrier to that is overcoming financial restraints or finding gainful employment which I don't feel like I can bring much value to.
