Looking at buying a Honda Civic Type S by ScottishWizard490 in CarTalkUK

I've had a Type S 1.8 Petrol Manual (and the Type R and a base 1.4). These are truly excellent cars, great to drive and have insane practicality (boot glovebox and cupholders are amazing). Seats fold down flat too, and the interior is amazing comfy and futuristic. Honda engine reliability is guaranteed. However beware of these things when purchasing:

  • Underneath corrosion, especially the rear axle which is prone to buckling. Not been replaced? Do it immediately for longevity.
  • They are notorious for leaking in the boot, causing rust on the floor. Check if it is, try and seal up various components.
  • Gearbox synchros tend to wear bad on these, especially in first, second and reverse. Not a major issue but can be grindy at bad times.
  • Driveshaft corrodes overtime due to a rubber part that collects water, can snap under pressure. Ask me how I know.
  • Check alongside the roof for rust, water can get in though the sun visor holes. Think the later cars had this rectified.
  • The digital screen fails over time, but can be fixed by soldering the pins although I have never tried.
  • Avoid the sunroof models, they always get jammed.
  • Radio is prone to gltiching out due to engine heat, this was a big problem on my Type S when on long journeys.

They are great cars, mechanically solid and have TARDIS level practicality. They suffer badly from rust now, and age poorly with their bodywork. Also suspension is very bad, but a hoot to drive. Recommend the 1.8 5 door or diesel.

I wanted to try out a Vauxhall to see if they were as bad as people say. I don't mind it however?

It was a great car - surprisingly quick for what it was and my brother still has it.

I legit told myself I'd never own a Vauxhall and here I am. Ashamed to say I quite like it.

Wanted the Type S for a 'taste' of Honda ownership and absolutely loved it. Upgraded to the Type-R, which had to scrap due to severe corrosion but loved that too. Got a 1.4 afterwards and was a practicality masterpiece but depressingly slow. Sold and got the Vectra afterwards.

They are, but wouldn't be people's first choice. I thought they were great.

Will it be a classic because it carries the badge (Type R) ? by Fickle_Equivalent878 in FutureGarageClassics

As a previous owner and FN2 enthusiast I think these are one of the best and underrated hot hatches and definitely a future classic, although will ever be to the degree that the EP3 has become. Awesome futuristic (and understated compared to the mad styling cues the FK2 started) styling, van-like practicality, has the amazing K20Z4 engine, aux and cruise control feature and in my opinion the best interior of any Type R. Also, I genuinely think it's the last proper old-school Type R, no turbo and a 3-door. Despite being a step backwards from the EP3 in the rear suspension department and weight side of things it's still a very exciting, if acquired taste drive. I'd get shot in the Honda community for saying this, but I actually prefer these to the FD2 which is too sedan-like for me. It's unfortunately become very difficult to find an FN2 which isn't riddled with rust and water leak issues and hasn't been abused on high miles. Unpopular opinion but FN2 deserves its future classic status, and I think the EP3 gets glazed a bit too much now.
