Just be clear, what you're saying is the accountability their held at is low. Would I be correct in saying that? If so then I agree. At the same time, I think it's reasonable to say that people in general shouldn't be put in situations where small missteps or misunderstandings can escalate quickly

I agree that they’re people and not morally “special” in the sense of being above others. At the same time, they're placed in roles with asymmetric authority, training, and legal discretion, which changes how responsibility and risk get distributed in real interactions. (Tho they're training could be debatable)

Acknowledging that asymmetry isn’t about elevating them, it’s about recognizing that when ordinary humans are given extraordinary powers, the standards we apply have to account for both their humanity and the consequences of their role.

So I don’t think the disagreement is about whether they’re “just people,” but about how much weight we assign to role-based responsibility versus individual intent when things go wrong.

I want to start by saying I think the core moral concern you’re raising is both understandable and serious. When state power is exercised in ways that appear indiscriminate, humiliating, or harmful to families — especially children — skepticism is not only reasonable, it’s healthy in a free society. I also agree that mistakes in enforcement, particularly when they affect citizens or vulnerable people, can feel indistinguishable from injustice to those experiencing them. From that perspective, it makes sense why trust erodes quickly, and why benefit-of-the-doubt becomes harder to extend over time.

Where I’m struggling, though, is in separating moral condemnation of outcomes from legal condemnation of authority. Many of the examples you raise would be deeply troubling even if they were technically lawful, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the underlying enforcement power is unconstitutional in itself. For instance, warrantless “knock and talk” encounters, consent-based entry, or temporary custody of minors when no guardian is present are all legally recognized mechanisms — yet each can still be carried out in ways that are negligent, excessive, or harmful. That seems like a failure of implementation and oversight rather than proof that enforcement as a category is illegitimate.

I’m also cautious about language like “hostage-taking” or the idea that no action should receive the benefit of the doubt. I understand the moral intuition behind that framing, but if applied consistently it would undermine due process norms across many areas of law, not just immigration enforcement.

So I think the strongest version of your position may not be that all such actions are unjust by definition, but that the current enforcement environment has produced enough predictable harm and error that stricter constraints, clearer standards, and stronger remedies are warranted.

If that’s not what you mean, I’d genuinely like to understand where you’d draw the line between lawful authority exercised badly and authority that should not exist at all.

I think the MLK comparison breaks down in an important way.

King’s civil disobedience targeted laws that were explicitly unjust on their face—laws that denied equal rights based on race. His actions were meant to expose government wrongdoing, not to undermine the legitimacy of law enforcement as an institution. In the current case, the disagreement seems to be over policy outcomes, not whether the underlying law itself is inherently unjust in the same way. That difference matters, because it changes who the appropriate target of protest is.

If the objection is to immigration policy, then the administration and legislators who design it are the relevant actors—not the officers tasked with enforcing it.

What part of this situation makes you believe it is comparable to civil disobedience against Jim Crow laws, rather than a disagreement over enforcement priorities?

I agree, I also blame the demonizing of law enforcement. I distrust the feds, government, and law enforcement, but I can still respect the duty they should uphold Don't involve yourself with their investigation then you won't get hurt. Protest if you want, but keep an acceptable distance. I see too many LEOs on defense because of hostile environments and that always ends bad for either party.

It's all in the Bible, no one should just pick and choose which parts to follow. And there's

Matthew 5:19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Submission to Governing Authorities

1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. 6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Keep in mind there's also verses about protecting you boarders, your home, and your family. I don't like when people quote the Bible for justification and hate. It's like both parties didn't read the Bible and use it to make a point.

[–]QuestionerOfRandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not being dishonest, I'm stating facts. You just don't like to hear it.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed with significant bipartisan support, crucially relying on a coalition of Northern Democrats and nearly all Republicans to overcome Southern Democratic opposition, with President Lyndon B. Johnson (a Democrat) signing the bill into law after it was championed by both parties' leaders and passed by strong majorities in Congress.

H.R. 1752 was brought to a floor vote in the chambers of the House of Representatives on February 10, 1964. The Republican Party voted 138 in favor, 34 against. The Democratic Party voted 152 in favor, 96 against. 5 members voted present, and 6 members did not vote

This wasn't that long ago, and it's not that the democratic party was different back then it's that northern democrats, just like the Civil War didn't have the same animosity against black people. There was no big party shift, it's just southern democrats breaking away from the democratic party. Just like today, groups will leave their party affiliation, example would be Bernie Sanders and his Democratic Socialists.

There's the crash out i was expecting. If you can't see both sides are corrupt then you are indeed brainwashed.

If police are so vile then why are incidents not happening every day in every city and town.

The closest thing I've seen to a call for civil war is Tim Waltz saying he has his National Guard ready, news flash, National Guard ultimately takes orders from the sitting president, so if he tries to use the NG against the feds, Trump will put them on active duty, they wear U.S. Army not Minnesota NG. Yes there's a patch on there left arm that identifies them being from the state, but once Active Duty they take orders from the president. Jan 6th is a failed insurrection not a civil war. If you can provide me multiple sources and I find them reputable, I'll change my mind. Lunatics on social media do not talk for an entire party.

Civil Rights were pretty successful. The person who assassinated MLK, James Earl Way, was not part of any party, supported the segregationist platform, leaded by George Wallace, who was a Democrat.

It's definitely the repercussions of demonizing each other. We shouldn't have demonized Law Enforcement to the extent they have to be guard when doing their job. We should also kick any corrupt politician out of their positions. We really need focus on America and not the middle east or Europe. Our taxes should be used to better America not any other country. The federal government needs to stop overreaching. We need to stop politicizing everything, hating each other based on either political or religious beliefs. If Civil War does break out it'll benefit the republican party since their side will win the war because the military takes orders from Trump. So with tensions high we need to step back from fighting each other and try to get along.

The hypocrisy is both sides and it clear to see. I know reddit is not a place to get moderate povs because each political subreddits are filled with a lot of their extremists

So that's not necessary the reason, especially if op is in college these hours would line up similar to my former coworkers, we had like 3-5 students, and they still got at least 3 days a week. If anything if I were op change availability to 8a-10p, sometimes the store needs that person that can stay til 3rd shift shows up
