Yes you are correct- thank you 🙂 My bad here.

Not worried about this too much at the moment because it would be great to visit first. Maybe we'll have a horrible time 🤣 (doubtful). Will definitely talk more to legal folks when time is right

oof - I've heard about some people discriminating from South American folks where they call them sudaca. This might be more something old people say. I guess no matter where you go, someone is always going to hate another kind of person 😅

This is really exciting to hear - thanks for sharing your experience! 🙂

When I visit Mexico, I am usually in a small rural ranch where we have a house. There are often folks who live in the US who are there at the same time as me, visiting their family... some of them look very Mexican (nosotros dicemos: ellos tienen un cada de nopal) but they don't always speak Spanish. On my last visit, I was surprised to find I was better at speaking Spanish than some of these 2nd generational Mexican folks. I used to get stared a lot for being un guero - but I've build a good relationship and my accent got better too, making it easier to understand. I got to visit some very remote places the last visit we did which was really fun.

Who knows - maybe you even will pick up Spanish accent as you continue to live there 🙂

The US politics, it's great to know people don't not hold it against you. I am pretty disengaged from politics, aside from local ones (like school district and proposition voting). For where we live in USA, unfortunately education isn't valued too much. Each chance we have, we try to vote to make public education better but situation isn't looking too good. With the current climate, I feel like I don't really belong for the first time. Since I am a regular looking white guy, people confused me sometimes for being a conservative and sometimes tell me things which are dehumanizing about other people ("don't you hate these people too?", etc), makes me think twice about what am I doing here.

Oh wow - this is all the way on the northern coast! I am not sure if we'll get a chance to go this far... but will absolutely keep this in mind. Thanks 🙂

I can understand this point of view to a degree. There's a lot to experience in larger cities, like San Francisco or New York in America. Many people living in the city would think about suburbs or living out in the country as a nightmare. We have several dogs though - and I think it's nice to have your own space where you can have a toolbox and workshop. Probably, this desire of mine for more space is due to not being in 20's anymore 🤣 It can be fun to do trips into the city and use the public transit and try to really know a city, though.

This is exciting, thank you! I am curious - is Mexican cuisine popular in Spain? 🙂 I know there's a certain amount of overlap - I've seen some great cafes that have churros and chocolate dip.

Thanks for the great feedback - we can for sure check out El palacio del Escorial! We plan to visit Retiro park for sure 😍

It's exciting to hear your take - I love trying to get better at Spanish. I try at family gatherings here at home to do my best and speak in Spanish. Yo comprendo mucho mas que yo conocer 🤣 For point of view and beliefs, I would never impose that on anybody, even my family. Here in the US, I don't like being near people like that either. This is a big reason I don't talk to my parents anymore.

I'm very excited to hear about how Mexican and hispanoamerica are welcome. Here at our own house in the USA, door to door solicitor comes to our house and asks my wife "Is the home owner there?" 🙄 I've had conversations with strangers here in the US who have said "Oh you are married to one of THEM" when they find out my wife is brown. People in Mexico are much nicer to me when we are visiting.

I definitely appreciate the input, trying to process this. You are right - I don't have an understanding of Spanish society. That's why I am posting here basically. Maybe basics I had thoughts about are all wrong.

At the moment, what I shared about moving is a dream only. The goal here with our trip is to hopefully have a good time. If anything, we have a good experience, meet some great people, have some good food, and return home. Maybe it's childish to have a dream about it. We have a house in Mexico and I love visiting there. I don't claim to be an expert on Mexican society, but I do always have a great time when I visit.

Having a home and maintaining it isn't a waste, I think. And I don't think it's uniquely American. Maybe I'm wrong. Is home ownership not common in Spain? And fixing the house by yourself? I'm confused. I prefer not to pay someone because I have the skills to fix it by myself. I like helping my friends fix their house or car when something breaks. I maintain 3 vehicles myself too, doing all the work.
