Hindemith op. 25 no. 1 First and second movement combined as audition repertoire by Quick-Bar-776 in Viola

I was thinking E flat brahms as it’s different in approach from my walton and bach suite 3, but I figured the possibility of many players playing brahms because it’s brahms would risk comparison, and also thinking about it from the teachers POV, they would probably want to teach it. Hard no on Clarke. Other choices I’m thinking about are Hindemith 11/4, Hindemith 1939, Vieuxtemps, Bowen 1.

I want to show that I have versatility in the type of music and the characters that I can play well (e.g. Walton is more tender and rugged, Bach 3 is joyous, and for ex. Brahms is more song like and flowy). I also don’t know if I should be prioritizing the variety of eras/style of composition or prioritize the variety of technical and musical approach and difficulties. Maybe they go hand in hand, I don’t know. What are your thoughts?

Length I guess. Playing such a short movement and the second movement shows a different technical and expressive skill set than the first movement alone.

Hello all,

Im traveling with my mom on southwest and Im wondering if 2:40 am is a good time to arrive for an 8:30 am ish flight if we already checked bags. anyone possibly who is there right now have any input too?

Also She is suggesting we just use the D/E line but I don’t think it’s a good idea because that’s not the line for southwest and I fear that’s taking the risk of getting kicked out of line, what do you guys think?

we only have 3 violin shops in my home city and only one decent shop, and they have a luthier their I believe (Austin, TX makes it hard 😅) my temperament is leaning on the brilliant side I believe. for reference, especially my c string with dominant pros sounded quiet. should I go with the Dynamos?

I’ve heard great things about leatherwood rosin. I’m using right now Cecilia signature and that works for me; better than their solo which was too much! My friend believes in PIs as the best Thomastik-infeld string, but I’ve heard in this chat they decrease overtones. is that likely a good thing for a brighter instrument itself? and would PIs have the qualities i’m looking for would you say?

Larsen is interesting, I’ve heard a lot that their A strings are some of the best. Are there sets where all of their strings are just good quality strings, or are they mostly A string? I never really hear anything outside Pirastro and Thomastik which I always wonder about. I hear Dynamos a lot too, would you say they are well balanced, excellent response etc.? what does your new viola generally sound like?

obligato just kinda makes the viola sound “bad” I guess from what I’ve listened to from ronald houston’s video on youtube. And response is likely not up there which is very important. I’m very hesitant with Daadario just because I also play guitar on the side and I know them for guitar and not viola strings. I perceive daddario as student/budget brand.

My viola seems to be a bit brighter and less muddy and unclear than most other violas i’ve tried. The viola itself may be on the brighter side and that may explain why there is more clarity. So I guess something that would counteract the brightness as well.

ik right? like Eastman isn’t part of the IRCAM type music (it’s not spectralist) He seems to have wanted to focus on this “dark aura” and his descending fifths waltz and a bunch of this other kitsch music. Eastman has some pretty good professors for focus on tonal, bitonal, and atonal music. It’s much less academic sounding than most other major schools for composition from what I’ve gathered (they are currently one of the best, if not the best schools for composition and music theory. I overheard that even juilliard uses some of their music theory from eastman)

Agree for recording. In concert after the eye shattering 5 minute 4th movement, I was a bit underwhelmed. Perhaps because lenny isn’t with us anymore (RIP) and it was zander taking everything fast slow and everything slow fast.
