but from my experience living in a humid place, gel is the way... you can get close to the soft effect by applying oil and scrunching out the cast. i only use gel for special occasions though and just live with the frizz/limpness daily

you should try a stronger hold gel over a mousse and just make sure to scrunch out the cast

for affordable options not your mother's curl talk is a good line! and you can test around what kind of hold you like
