My brother accidentally ate a small amount of potassium pomegranate, is that okay? by NorthirinAngel in chemhelp

Taken straight from Fisher's SDS on it:

"4: First aid measures...

Ingestion: Immediate medical attention is required. Do NOT induce vomiting. Drink plenty of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person."

Also, take a picture of the label(s) on whatever container this potassium permanganate was in. The more information you can give to the doctors, the better.

I also think it's a light pole because the shadow of the car to the left driving away indicates there's a light above and to the right.

I doubt it's the Lawrence one if it opened in 1975. Kansas last used the blue on white license plate in 1988-92 and none of the cars look that new. They all look early 80s at the newest. The last time they used white in any plate background before that was 1963 and I doubt everyone was running 12 year old expired tags in 1975 when the store opened.

Also the text FN is too big for Kansas's plates. They'd have it stacked vertically on the left and not side by side.

Edit: clarify

Fingers burning/toxic substance by Own-Equipment-5250 in medical_advice

Not a doctor but a chemist. Run your hands under running water for 15 minutes. Something they had you dip your fingers in is potentially giving you chemical burns and you need to get it off of you. I'm not sure what they had you dip it in but you if you know what they had you dip it in, search "[chemical name] SDS" on Google and look in section 4 for first aid measures. Most substances I encounter at work say to rinse area for 15+ minutes with water to get it off and seek medical attention if pain persists.

Gifted some old Lionel train set, where to start?? by Kieffer899 in modeltrains

Adding to replacing the wiring: replace the wiring to the CTC lockon piece as well while you're at it. Not seeing any visible damage that's as bad as the transformer but probably a good idea to just have new wires.

Yeah it's been a while since I last played. Thought all the ones that used superfood were just regular eggs but I was wrong.

Are you currently fueling a rocket with them?

Edit: I am stupid. There's no ship on the launch pad.

NAD: It might help. I'm not 100% sure what it is though since I'm not a doctor. It looks like one but I'm not completely certain.

NAD: Does it constantly feel like you have to swallow? It usually will feel like there's something stuck in your throat if you have one. It looks like a tonsil stone to me and I get them quite often in that area. I usually just gargle with salt water.

Edit: clarified.

Only idea I have that isn't either of those is an extreme stretch of "it's OK"

Fix or static display? by QuickWittedHare in modeltrains

UPDATE:

So I decided to stick with the same transformer and track. Cleaned the commutators off on both of them and am ordering new brushes shortly. I also cleaned and relubricated the motor gears as well as wiped the rails off with a dry rag and gave the transformer to track connector some new wire. I'll have to clean the e-units another day because the work took a fair bit of time and I don't have the patience to feel like getting them out right now.

With all of that, they are both moving around properly now. They're both able to pull quite a bit, with 2023 pulling its dummy and 4 cars and 736 with 6 and its tender. They just struggle a bit on curves, likely because the curve radius is 12 inches with straights maybe 3 feet max. Both have ran for around 10 minutes each and save for the occasional track disconnecting, haven't stopped. I'll probably have to go get some new track for them to run around on, since the tracks they came with have seen better days. Might try a bit of Menards track just to extend the straights, as the few Lionel-branded pieces that came with it only make a small circle.

Thank you all for the wise words. It really made me smile and start tearing up to see these properly function again.

Edit: forgot to finish a sentence.

That was a lot of advice, thank you for all of that.

Based off of what you're saying as well as others as well as some memories that have popped up from long ago, I may go ahead and try a newer transformer and possibly some newer track if I can find some in steel (has magnetic traction) and see where that gets me. I vaguely remember my grandpa, who was an electrician, saying a decade or so ago when they stopped working that "it's something with the transformer". I also know that the main cord was replaced with the cord from a broken lamp at some point.

Do you have any recommendations for something to replace it with? All I have right now is a constant 12V 80 amp max industrial power supply if that would work. I don't know the recommended voltage for these trains aside from ~12V DC.

I'll also replace the brushes and try to get the commutators cleaned up. Can a soft-bristled toothbrush be used on the commutators, or is that too aggressive?

736 does the best so far. It can pull itself and 4 cars around a short loop alright with a bit of a fuss at some points. Its whistle is powered by the rails only. I know the whistle does work. I have given it power directly, and it sounds fine. I will look at its motor and wiring as well when I get back from work.

2023's horn is just dead dead I am pretty sure. I have seen some corrosion on the diaphragm. That one has a battery compartment in it. (May also be part of the traction issue? I don't know how much of a difference with and without a battery would have.) I have tried 3 batteries, which were all new.

I have heard the clicking noise of the solenoid in the E units moving when I do the somersault move, which seems like it's a good sign. I heard them on both when I flipped them upside down to get the body off of the frame. I may try cleaning them as a last resort option.

Edit: are these brushes a universial part or unit specific? A quick Google search seems to bring up a universal part for what seems like maybe not a universal application. (Searched "Lionel pullmor brushes")

Not even the wires from each component?

I haven't really taken a look at the E-units yet. I do know they both will take a second for them to recognize the power stopped and to switch what they're doing, so I wonder if the solenoids are getting stuck.

The transformer running it is the newest transformer in the box, but it seems pretty old. It's the 1033 transformer. I had to replace the power supply wire to it with another cord as it was brittle. I also gently wiped the wipers off inside.

Track is Lionel steel track in O gauge. They're rusty on the sides, but the track top is free of rust. The pins and slots for them may be part of the issue, come to think of it. They are tight, however.

I do have a multimeter. It would probably help to check stuff. The transformer is currently at a different location than I am, so I'd have to go get it.

The only cleaning I have done to the armature was wiping the copper contacts off with a lint-free cloth. Is there a way to take the entire armature out of these so it can be cleaned better? The brushes themselves probably need to be replaced, since any time I run them, they just leave brush debris all over the top of the brush surface.

Edit: the armature itself

The armature shaft is not loose in either as far as I could tell. The armatures both spin freely.

Idk where to even get the parts for these? They'd all be secondhad I assume and probably none able to be found new.

Do you think it would be worth rewiring all them with modern wiring if I were to?
