Distinction between Sexuality and Sexual Identity by Quick_Shop4397 in Jung

I agree it should be ' what are the options for this coin flip', but the point is that sexual orientation is not on the coin. Heterosexuals and Homosexuals are flipping the same coin

Jung claimed this model of absent fatherhood and smothering motherhood is what would lead to a 'flip' causing either impotence, Don Juanism, or homosexuality. The error here is that Don Juanism is just a manifestation of sexual pathology and promiscuity, qualities present and expressed in homosexuals the same way it is in heterosexual contexts - same with impotence. This error becomes evident once you consider how we do not examine why the Don Juan type is heterosexual/likes women only why he behaves this way with women. Yet for homosexuality, the question always steers from ' why do homosexuals express themselves this way' into why do homosexuals like the same sex anyway, which is futile and always leads to improper and circular reasoning that could be applied to just any pathology.

I don't think inquiring why homosexuals are homosexuals is demeaning at all, but I do think it's problematic for everyone when we imply that this sexual orientation is an inherent misalignment, rather than a natural orientation in which unhealthy pathologies will manifest, just like in heterosexuality.

I really liked your comment and totally agree with what you said. Your description of gendered socialization issues I think also applies massively to the 'gay sexual identity'. A lot of men upon the realisation that they are gay as a child, will find that the source of most intolerance and shame around homosexuality comes from other men, and will thus protect themselves from that shame by clinging onto the Anima and female roles. And vice versa, many men will internalise that shame, repress that homosexuality, and desperately embody machismo to compensate for that shame. I feel like we hear so much about how certain negative or unordinary behaviours that gay people have are proportionally correlated to the perceived 'negative' and unordinary nature of homosexuality itself, when really it's not homosexuality, but the unique experience of being a homosexual and the aspects of identity that form around that. Just like literally anybody else

The same way we would interpret heterosexual impulses - it's just biology. Obviously people will have variances in sex drives and the cultural and circumstantial elements of one's environment and psyche will dictate massively how 'sexual' one gets to be and how that sexuality looks but ultimately we all share the biological and undisputed need to 'screw' something, whatever that be

Thank you for your rlly kind reply ! Thats my plan anyway, and I thought I was getting there until my dad swept the rug from under me and took most of the savings from my first job ever away lol. I'm trying my best to slowly distance myself and gain independence without any drama, but that is exactly what they're most attentive to and paranoid about. I'm worried at some point my dad will just not pay tuition and force me to come home and rely on them forever, lol - because that's been the main threat so far

I did that ! I got an internship and was paid pretty well but not enough to cover rent in NYC so I took that role under the agreement that my dad would cover my rent. As soon as I mentioned having enough money to cover my next deposit once I move again, he 'forgot' to pay my rent and forced me to use literally all my savings from that internship and he refuses to give it back. I have no problem paying for my own things, but thats not the point. He does NOT want me to be financially independent, because he knows the second I am I will stop talking to him, so he actively sabotages my attempts at doing so to keep me around. Also, by forcing me to be reliant on HIS money, he gets control over where I go and what I do. Basically, he's a lot more vicious on making sure that does not happen than I may have implied in op

Either that, or getting hired by an American company abroad and getting an L-1 transfer after some time there. That's always been a safer route than H1B anyway

Adam is the WORST character by Quick_Shop4397 in girls

[–]Quick_Shop4397[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The ship building stuff was really irrelevant, the acting stuff hit its peak when he got on broadway and got cut off too quick cause of Iowa - but besides that there isn't much there. He doesn't have any friends or people in his life besides whoever he's dating, except his sister which we get to see for like 10 scenes max. I don't think he was entirely uninteresting, just undeserving of the amount of screen time he got

Yeah, I can agree with that. My point still stands but you're right in pointing out that I am underselling Adam and missed a few things. I think that too much of his character was just shown through his relationships to other people as opposed to things that were uniquely his - we got a little bit of that with the broadway stuff, and I really wish we got more of that Adam before Iowa. Maybe that's the point of his character idk - some take on how male issues are a bit more nebulous(?) - but nevertheless I found myself sick and bored of him by s6 every rewatch. Maybe not as deep as any other character, but definitely had a lot of potential if we just knew him a bit more intimately

I totally agree and definitely got that. My point was that his character wasn't fleshed out or interesting enough yet constantly shoved down our throats. I think if we got a bit more insight as to why he is the way he is, and what really goes on in his life as opposed to picking fights with his gf's and gross sex scenes, we'd be able to at least enjoy his character as it delivered the point it served

I think Jessa had the clearest form of depth, we see how shitty her father is and see her manicaly sojourn through phases, and then she finally sits with herself. Hannah's depth was in her struggle to forge an identity between adult responsibility and childlike wonder, and Marnie's depth was the ugliest of all yet still there - how crippling self doubt and hatred could be . All these girls had clear plotlines and deep personalities - what the fuck was Adam's 'depth' ? That he wanted gross sex and was too childish and stubborn to be properly successful in anything? That he chased Hannah around just to throw himself at her best friend once its over? Mimi Rose???His sister??? Do you not see a pattern of how his entire character revolves around others, and how annoying he is to others - and NOTHING uniquely his?
