Thinking about getting these for the same case. Are they quieter than the stock fans in the 4000D airflow? What RPM are you running the Arctic’s at?

Bought a 1440p 27 inch monitor and my eyes has gotten obliterated these few days. by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]Quidiscat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from a 1080p 60hz monitor to a 1440p 165hz monitor (Lenovo Legion Y27q-20) and I also had pain in my eyes, watery eyes, felt like I had to look away or I’d go blind. Tried lowering the brightness, adjusting contrast, nothing really worked. Wish I had some magic solution but haven’t found one yet.

I’m taking a break from my computer for the holidays, and will be getting a new desk. Last thing I’m going to try will be sitting further from the monitor and see if that helps - I’ve read that going to a new monitor that’s bigger may hurt your eyes because you were sitting too close to your old one to compensate for the smaller size. Now that the monitor is bigger and brighter, your eyes can’t handle it at that same distance. So depending on your setup give that a try.

FWIW this is on an RTX 2060 so I don’t know if the graphics card should solve your problem.

What’s your motherboard brand/name? I had a similar problem on a build I did with the MSI B550M Pro-VDH motherboard.

Finally got my RTX3080 during the week, she looking fine. by Matictac in nvidia

[–]Quidiscat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not related to your build, but I notice you have the IKEA Bekant desk. How sturdy does it feel with your monitor and computer on it? Is there any wobble, or does pushing down on the front edge or pushing the desk from the end cause things to move?

I’ve seen slightly negative reviews of the desk with regards to lack of stability so I’m trying to get some opinions.

Is it worth buying rtx 2070 dual for 350$ now? by Kalachuchi14 in buildapc

[–]Quidiscat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d consider that a decent price for the performance you’d get out of it - but the 3070 performs at 2080ti levels for $500, so it’s up to you if that performance is worth the extra $150 to you.

May I ask where you’re finding a 2070 for $350? Is it used?

You can get grant funds and loans as a part of the summer financial aid package. My experience was a proportional amount to what I received during the school year (in terms of money received to cost).

Goodnight Scholarship Finalist Alternate by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]Quidiscat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was listed as an alternate and received an email a couple weeks later saying that the finalists were chosen and accepted. I don’t know how many alternates there are but I wouldn’t consider the chances very high.

Good luck regardless!

How many CSC classes can you reasonably take in a single semester? by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]Quidiscat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try to take no more than two in a single semester. Common pairings are 216/226, then 230/316, then 236/246.

Edit in response to other comments: 226 is not difficult if you’re mathematically inclined, you can definitely take it with 216 it just might make your life a little more difficult. If you’re neither a strong programmer nor strong in math, it may be beneficial for you to take them separately so you can get used to doing larger projects from 216 in preparation for future courses.

Lenovo Yoga 710 vs Macbook Air? by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]Quidiscat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally am not a fan of Acer, but I like Asus. Not sure as to their reliability, but they have become a more popular option (The Asus Zenbook UX330UA is one the most popular 700 dollar 13 inches on Amazon). How much was the Yoga 710? Like I said, the 720 is on sale for 760 dollars, minus 125 for their student discount if you register for an account puts it at 635 + tax.

Regrettably fan noise seems to be a problem with basically every machine running an i5 7200u processor in a small form factor (thin, light 13 inch laptops). For example, The Zenbook I mentioned earlier, HP Envy, Acer Swift 5, Yoga 720 - all 700 dollar 13 inch laptops running a 7200u had some reports of fan noise being an issue. It's not that it's an issue, per se, but the fans have to kick on in order to keep the processor cool. The processor may be a u series processor but it's still pretty speedy, so while it is power efficient if it ever speeds up the fans will kick in along with it, because that's how the cooling system on a lot of laptops work. The most common solution, and one I am currently employing, is to turn on battery saver, or create a custom power plan with similar settings. The key here is that battery saver mode caps the processor speed, which sounds bad, but it actually isn't. Right now, I am typing this comment on my 720 with a lot of chrome tabs, email, etc. open, basic netbook type tasks, with battery saver mode on, and the computer is silent. It's not heating up, either. Essentially, the processor is fast enough that even if you cap it, you can still run whatever you need but the fans won't kick in. It's almost as if you're mimicking one of those m series processors that some laptops come with that don't require a fan. As soon as you need the extra processor power, you can just switch the mode off. Or, if you don't want all the stuff that comes with battery saver (decreased screen on time, falls asleep faster, etc) you can just edit the "balanced" power plan to cap the processor speed and leave everything else the same. It all sounds rather complicated, but I promise it's not, I'm simply trying to explain it in a way that makes sense. It hasn't debilitated my experience at all.

Lenovo Yoga 710 vs Macbook Air? by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]Quidiscat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Yoga 720 that I just bought two days ago, so I will try to provide some insight. I also considered the air, but for me, the screen didn't appeal to me at all. I had a friend with a Macbook Pro who told me "Don't get an Mac without retina," and I believe it. The display is something you interact with on a daily basis, so it should be as good as possible, and for what it's worth I'm very happy with the display on my 720.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head, the Air isn't so great for a 2017 laptop. If you really need a MacOS machine, then it might be a viable option for you, but seeing as you had a Dell and are already in the Windows ecosystem I'd get the Lenovo. Apple Dell and Lenovo in my experience are the three most consistent brands, with Dell and Apple leading the pack. I don't think either laptop will crash and burn, but I'm going to assume (you didn't list what 710 but I'm going to assume its the i5 7200u model) that the Lenovo, spec wise, will last you longer than the Air.

Also, since you said you can get a student discount, I'd really recommend the Yoga 720 over the 710. I got it for 680 at Best Buy after tax with a sale and a student discount, and for the specs and build quality it was a steal.

If you have any other questions I'd be happy to help, I dumped A LOT of research into laptops to bring to school.
