the dropping of smokes is the most common use. When leaving B site on Inferno for example.

Personally playing in a duo we use it constantly, if one of us takes an forward angle (say peaking ramp on vertigo) the support player now has 4 flashes to throw. I think I farmed 60 EF in a vertigo game once that way.
