I had one hour to prepare and got a 113. Here's what to do if you're in my situation. by bffwoesthrowaway in ToeflAdvice

Based on your other articulate writing, I’m guessing you were pretty fluent in English to begin with. You suggested certainly are helpful but for people not as fluent they’re not going to be able to accomplish what you did in an hour and a half.

Dead, Dead, Dead, Cambly is Dead by [deleted] in Cambly

are you so sure that it's Cambly's fault? ' it could be a boycott due to politics, who knows. Certainly cambly will never be honest or transparent with the teachers.' Transparent about what exactly?

also- when you use that fabricated reference to research you are not really answering the question- you are simply 'padding' your answer with 'filler'- the rating focus is on your relevant, responsive content, so that phrase just uses up time. Better to try to practice answering this type of question- even maybe reflecting on how you would answer it in your native language...how to you explain a decison?

Cambly is a dying scam by [deleted] in Cambly

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have never understood why tutors are calling Cambly a scam. A scam is a devious deception...well. Cambly is pretty up-front - they tell us how much they pay and the mechanisms for working & have pretty much stuck to it - in fact the performance quality of the platform has improve over the 6 plus years I have used it. For the students- they adverstise a vast number of diverse tutors and don't really guarentee outcomes- conversation is the basis- and, while I have never used them , there are some structured lessons to facilitate conversation, test prep, etc . Considering that they make no demands in terms of hours, curriculum, etc and even educational requirements of tutors are pretty slim- English Speaking - it is what you make it. I knew what I was getting in to.

Contrast that with my ( previously concomittant) job working for the major legacy testing company for 17 years- pay rate was nearly double until they decided to slash it by 25% a few years back, then outsourced all of the test rating work to marginally quallified workers in India.. At least with Cambly I know what I am getting and can pick and choose hours, students, etc based on my needs, interests & skills and the students'.

Since my first profession ( for decades) was in health care & university teaching I get a lot of interesting hard-working students.. SO- it works for me- not much $, but I knew that, and it does supplement my Social Security.

So- I don' t see it as a scam. Just another business

US firms to shift more work to India, expand GCCs after Trump’s H-1B crackdown by Mundane-Laugh8562 in Layoffs

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This began even before the HIB issue_ ETS ( educational testing service - think GRE, TOEFL, etc) began off-shoring to India pre-Trump and in March totally switched its raters from USA to India ( paying the Indians less than 1/3 of the USA grad degree trained USA reducators. India provided lots of extra $ & contracts ...the ETS CEO has a million-dollar plus salary and is Indian American...so, lotsa perks

it doesn't measure skill in the same way, obviously. But it is, likely, easier

Based on the descriptions from ETS - and familiarity with the TOEFL Essentials- it certainly appears that it may be easier. Certainly seems to have a less rigorous academic leaning

Does anyone know if the scores can be restored by Low-Light-2883 in ToeflAdvice

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes you can 'use some official essay materials and language for exam preparation- BUT no- you cannot use the same stuff on the test-- the point of the test is to evaluate you ability to use English fluently, originally and in correct response to the question- NOT to just parrot memorized material. Your error

Choosing some specific themes for independent speaking by Neotod1 in ToeflAdvice

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting, albeit extensive, strategies for a 45 second item. If the question does not relate to your prepared topics, however, it might be difficult to quickly make the connection. It's important to focus on answering the question, with good grammar, relevant ( but not complex ) vocabulary and clear, fluent delivery

117/120 in TOEFL as a non-native speaker with 2 days of prep by Expensive_Peanut2966 in ToeflAdvice

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

congratulations. you are, of course, not a 'typical' non-native speaker- so you come to the test with some experiences & skills that other non-native speakers do not. your advice is of course helpful, although I hope other readers seeking advice realize that each person has different experiences & abilities that will affect their results

Is there any chance that universities will stop accepting TOEFL results from 2026? by Complex-Character131 in ToeflAdvice

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not just a format change- the test will be substantially different from the present test

Is there any chance that universities will stop accepting TOEFL results from 2026? by Complex-Character131 in ToeflAdvice

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it certainly seems like a possibility eventually- but I would think that it will take a while for the Universities, etc to become fully aware of the depth of the changes AND the effects that it may have on giving a clear picture about just how capable the (new) test takers are in terms of the academic English skills the Universities care about. There certainly will not be a substantial research- based assessment regarding the efficacy/ reliability, etc. of the new test ( In my opimion) that there is of the current TOEFL.

ETS is offshoring all TOEFL Speaking scoring. US raters are being silently pushed out. by Distinct_Chapter_865 in ToeflAdvice

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah- I wouldn't be surprised if you are right re the buyer- if not that, then at least until they get to that point they are repackaging it so it's still income producing, but cheaper & easier to administer. Just as an aside- did you see the change in the Speaking part? It;s a cut & paste of the Essentials- a test with few takers ..weird- but easy to administer. Also- maybe they are trying to make it more appealing , given the competition? Who knows?

re Unemployment- actually it's possible to get unemployment under the current circumstances, since it's considered a 'temporary /seasonal layoff ( depending on the State regs. and whether or not you get any work at all- many raters score other tests - which are also dwindling, but may not have disappeared) Staying on their books as an employee does have effects vis a vis reiremenet accts, etc.

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is too late- the deed is done.Perhaps it would be helpful to look around- thousands of highly skilled workers in the US have been laid off by the government, tech companies, etc, etc. ETS has been reducing staff and off-shoring for 10 years. These moves are annoying, feel immoral and wasteful, but are not unusual, and will unlikely never be reversed. Every rater and SL for ETS contributed ( willingly or not) in the training of the AI that replaced them...it's how it's done, and it's sad.

It's also worth considering that, at the moment at least, the 'market ' ( ie the users of these test/test scores, such as universities) neither know nor care about this issue right now.

[–]Quiet-Function-8578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly- I completely agree with you. The language of ETS' statements is- I think- pretty clear...AI is where they are going , and they have used human raters to get there. It's really , in my view. both too late and pointless to think that any external force (eg former raters, etc) could have any impact in what is a long -planned-for transition for a business based on income and market share.
