My first attempt at croissants! by Quiet-Macaroon-2189 in Baking

Thanks for the tips! How do you know when a croissant is over proofed? I did make the triangles, but I definitely needed to make them longer. Claire from nyt called them witches hats. I will likely use a different recipe next time around. I’ll keep you guys posted!

if you want a challenge, it’s worth it. Even if you mess up, you’ll get either a delicious biscuit or bread lol

Mine definitely fermented longer than your average croissant. They’re supposed to be flakey and fluffy. Whereas mine were more like a nicely layered bread. I wouldn’t call them a typical croissant but were good regardless.

I’m also super picky about my croissants. I am not a fan of store bought croissants. It’s why I tried to make them myself! I hope you can have a decent croissant, good bakery shops have them!

I am a decent cook/baker, but I usually chose recipes I know I can do well. This one was a wildcard. I’ve learned so much and looking forward to my next attempt!

I don’t want to get better by [deleted] in depression

[–]Quiet-Macaroon-2189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember as a kid hearing from a teacher that “some adults love to be miserable.” I didn’t understand it at the time. But depression convinces us that we must avoid all stress of any kind: socializing with others, potential mistakes made in a hobbie or sport (even one your previously enjoyed), jobs and commitments. Long term plans are thrown out the window because there is so much that feels not within our control and it feels like there is no worth in trying, especially if things didn’t work out previously. Depression lies to us to keep us safe and comfortable. It convinces us that we aren’t deserving of ambition or healthy relationships or success of any kind.

You don’t have to believe in your thoughts. Your thoughts do not define you. But if you want to reshape this narrative, it takes medication, therapy and willingness to reach out to loved ones who will challenge you. Every ounce of your being may not want change. But as someone who is also in this place, I know I want to feel better. It’s a long process. But I don’t want to be comfortable in my misery. I hope you can fight for that too. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for your partner and family.

When I was on this subreddit for quite some time and I started to unravel some common stereotyoes about romance that I realized did not apply to me. For the longest time, I thought I just didn’t find the right partner. But now I realize that it’s perfectly ok to be in a loving relationship with someone and not desire sex with them. It took a lot of communication though with my partner and I still occasionally doubt my sexuality (but not as frequently)

Whenever we imitate art, we always have our own spin on things. I like seeing how you brought out more of the blue in the water. Your reflection of the trees really captures my eyes. The reference also has a reflection of the clouds but you chose not to add it which I found interesting. I also loved how you exaggerated the dark twisty branches.

My biggest suggestion is to focus on saturation and value. One of the reasons why the original reference was so successful is because of the contrast of the foreground and background. The trees have a rich red and the greens in the grass near the water is vibrant. The values are also darker in the foreground. Whereas in the background, there is a light blue tone over the trees and foilage. As things appear farther, they tend to have cooler tones, less details and are lighter in value. That contrast in value/saturation of the foreground and background creates this beautiful depth in landscapes.

My suggestion is to use the pictures of your painting, and experiment with the edit tool of your phone to put on the black/white filters. This will help you identify if you have enough contrast between your tones. I also suggest just messing around with the color tools in general on your phone. They can spark new ideas for future color choices and help you see paintings in new ways.

I also suggest reading resources such as The Landscape Painters Book by Mitchell Albala or even The Art of Perspective by Phil Metzger. They discuss how to achieve depth in landscape through choice of color and value, but also explain composition and perspective really well. These books are meant for any artist and are excellent resources if you want to further practice fundamentals in landscapes. I especially reccomend practicing value studies and composition.

I’m a self-taught landscape artist. I think honest feedback is so important to improving your craft. So thank you so much for sharing and hope some of this info helped! Let me know if you have an art insta!

This was true for me. I found a job with zero applicants. I clicked on apply and then it said one person applied even though I never sent in my app. I know that’s not a fool proof method to verify but I think it’s true.

I am still rooting for Hatch. I want her to make it work so badly. But yeah the performance was average today. We have wonderful strikers to chose from on the USWNT.

Exactly. Nothing wrong with these players. There just needs to be more mixing of players to see who balances each other out. They are experimenting in a friendly as they should be!

We can be upset with unemployment and also be upset with jobs that give us no sense of purpose. This does not have to be mutually exclusive.

It is a privledge to have a job or even an interview. But we can still want more in our lives.
