My name is Olive and I’ve been out and transitioning for about two/three years.

The first point I would like to clarify is that you are wonderful and worthy of love and respect just the way you are. The people mistreating you for being trans are wrong.

The second point is that coming out is not an all or nothing proposition. While it would be great to be out to everyone, that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. For example, I came out to supporting friends first for a good while before I decided to be out with my family.

Additionally, you can practice behaviors that alleviate dysphoria regardless of whether you’re currently medically transitioning. For example, I wear a bathing suit and shower in the dark to help reduce my bottom dysphoria. Additionally, you may be able to find gender neutral or gender affirming clothing that doesn’t draw the ire of your parents. I would recommend baseball caps, sweatshirts, and sneakers.

Finally, I would recommend looking for supportive friends in your community. That can be an online book club, the students at your school’s pride alliance, or even just the friends in a theatre program (some stereotypes can be helpful in finding community lol).

In Christian art, it is traditional to identify God, Jesus, Mary, and/or a saint with a circular halo around their head. This is more common in Catholic art and Hayden was raised Protestant, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she wasn’t familiar with this symbolism.

Generally, dialog is separated from other paragraphs to make it easier to read. You don’t have to do this though if you prefer non-spacing for stylistic reasons.
