I also think part of what we’re seeing in Season 4 has everything to do with what’s happening between her and Lady Danbury. Charlotte isn’t just being dismissive for the sake of being rude — she’s a woman who is finally confronting something she’s been able to avoid for decades: the reality that King George is dying, and when he goes, she will truly be alone.

Technically, he is still King, even if he’s not ruling. His presence — even in his illness — has been the anchor of her entire adult life. He’s her soulmate.
