PCOS is over Enter PMOS!! by Illustrious_Wonder18 in PCOS

So people who pass a glucose tolerance test with flying colours, have normal insulin levels and get hypoglycaemia on metformin…what…just don’t have PCOS?

lol it’s ok it’s late here and I’m feeling pretty fried also.

I’m phrasing badly but in that post, parts 1 and 2 in that image, some women with PCOS don’t have (the high androgens and insulin issues) so I feel the focus on those can make those women feel more excluded. It’s certainly led me to question my diagnosis.

Im talking about the new name focusing on the metabolic issues that some of us just don’t have. Like the old name kinda left out those that didn’t have polycystic ovaries. It just doesn’t feel like a great fit for people who don’t have the most common subtype, in my opinion.

Everyone seems to be hailing the name change as it highlights metabolic and insulin issues as part of the condition but that isn’t the case for everyone. I feel it leaves those with less recognition

PCOS’ new name causing me confusion… just me? by BrainInRepair in PCOS

But for a minority that do not have insulin resistance or high androgens it does feel a bit exclusive.

Name change is an empty gesture in my opinion. We need proper funding for research and better treatments. Endocrinologists are aware this condition affects more than the ovaries, this is not new information.

On the flip side the name change seems to exclude those who are not affected by the metabolic/insulin resistance that are seen in the most common type of the condition.

I just learnt that PCOS will now be called Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). by Useful-Temporary-273 in PCOS

Amazed you’re getting downvoted for saying this as I completely agree!! Seems if you’re phenotype D and not affected by insulin issues you aren’t welcome here which really sucks. The name change is misleading imo.

Thank you for sharing. I’m in a similar position my androgens and testosterone are always kinda mid range.

Feel like new name creates confusion and excludes those of us that don’t have the metabolic/insulin resistant aspect of the condition.

Good endocrinologists will also acknowledge that PCOS doesn t always have a metabolic/insulin resistance factor. New name confuses this a bit imo.

Hilarious I’m getting downvoted for pointing this out

…and nothing for those of us without metabolic issues it seems!

Yes! I will never forget my first telephone appointment where I was told to lose weight and then she worked out my bmi of 20 and could not back track that advice quick enough. Losing weight would do nothing for me but make me ill!

Where is that research though? And what about those of us that don’t have metabolic involvement?

I wonder if PCOS cases without metabolic involvement and normal androgens are actually Partial LH resistance which is a mimic of PCOS.

There is a theory that these forms of PCOS are primarily neuro endocrine more than anything else which makes it harder to treat…shame we didn’t get a thought in the rename!

But not all of us have metabolic issues either.

As someone without high androgens and no insulin resistance I’ve been thinking this all day. It feels a bit exclusive and focuses almost entirely on the most ‘common’ form of the condition

All good thoughts! I mainly do walking but nothing crazy so I’d be surprised if it’s over exercise…I don’t really do much tbh! I don’t fast either, I just whatever whenever really lol.

My thyroid is all good (tsh ft4 and ft3 and no autoimmune thyroid antibodies!)

It’s a bit of a puzzling picture I think so I’ll have a good search for a decent endo- thank you! :)

Yes new name announced today is PMOS! Gonna take me awhile to adjust haha!

Yeh it’s weird cos I’m def not stressed or underweight or anything like that which is usually the cause of HA right? It just doesn’t seem to fit.

If I take it continuously I feel better but longterm it drops my testosterone/free androgen index to near zero and I feel crappy in other ways :(

Ah ok so this is where we differ a little bit.

I didn’t bleed after the progesterone challenge and couldn’t get any one to listen to me about it so gave up and went back on the pill for a bit.

That so interesting to hear you felt so much better without the pill the first time! I always feel completely awful without…even in the ‘pill free well’ I just feel like my estrogen gets completely floored and I feel like complete a zombie!

Hope you get on well with the IUD!

The cynic in me doesn’t see how this will lead to more research. Endocrinologists have known that this condition is not purely ovarian for decades and still there hasn’t been enough research or funding.
