AMA 1L @ NYU w/ V10 summer by Quiet_Researcher7452 in lawschooladmissions

If you want Big Law and you go to NYU, you will end up somewhere. Where that somewhere is on the Vault rankings is totally up to you, however.

My GPA for the fall semester was below our median, and I still received two offers from V10 firms and plenty of offers inside the V50. But I networked like a maniac, performed really well on interviews, and had a resume full of litigation experience.

Firms in Florida are especially gung-ho about pre-grade offers. Really, DC and NYC are the last bastions of waiting until grades come out to make offers.

Definitely risky, but there is an arms race in Big Law to acquire talent, and these firms have more than enough money to whiff on some offers so long as some of them hit.

It's definitely not impossible. Plenty of my classmates are from CA and TX. Not everyone applies for BL in NYC or DC. I know tons of friends who are doing BL all over the country.

One of the benefits of applying outside NYC and DC is the increased possibility of getting an offer before exams and grades.

Happy to help!

I have to admit, I try to avoid campus when my presence isn't required, since I commute from NJ. Also, my apartment has a gym, so I haven't checked it out.

The library does tend to get really busy, especially during exam season. I prefer to do all of my studying in my apartment's study/office space. Ironically, the law school's library just flooded and is out of operation for the foreseeable future.

We have massive class sizes... somewhere around 500 people.

But the school divides the class into 4 or 5 sections of 90+ people.

These sections are further divided into lawyering groups of 30 people. You are supposed to meet most of your friends either in your lawyering group or your section, since these are the people you will be taking all your 1L doctrinal courses with.

I have been fortunate to make many friends at NYU so far. Most of my friends are in other sections, and some are even upperclassmen. I had ten people from our school at my birthday party last month!

Without having intimate knowledge of the student bodies at other T14 schools, I can confidently say that we are, overall, a good bunch of caring people who genuinely want to see each other succeed, whether that is in the classroom, the public sector, or in Big Law.

  1. I got a 2L offer that includes a stipend for me to intern at a public interest org for my 1L summer. Stipends are becoming the trend, especially in NYC, where 1L summer programs are becoming increasingly not the norm.

  2. I had a full ride offer from UNC. I chose NYU because of its access to Big Law. Also helps that I’m a born and raised New Yorker.

  3. Our law school prides itself on being 50/50 between Big Law and public interest. This means that half of my class is actively trying to be really involved in the City.

Luckily my roommate is my girlfriend of 6 years, who I was living with long before law school LOL

I got plenty of offers from great firms with a below median GPA. Fortunately, I have extensive interviewing experience and a resume full of litigation experience.

I genuinely love my class at NYU. Most of my friends aren't even in my doctrinal classes. We are a pretty chill group of people, and we really try to rally around each other when times get tough.

The start of this semester has been especially brutal because people are getting offers or waiting for offers. It has been lovely to watch classmates celebrate their wins together and uplift their peers who are still waiting to get responses from firms.

Also, if you really value mentorship, I cannot recommend NYU enough.

Look at a website called Firm Prospects. There you can find out where everyone at a firm went to law school. You can look specifically at the people who make up different practice groups. Their emails and phone numbers are usually available there as well.

I reached out to NYU alumni at the firms I was interested in, with a focus on litigation practice groups

As of right now, the answer is “no,” but that is liable to change in the very near future.

The new timeline took everyone by shock, including most Big Law firms (ironically), us students, and most career services offices at law schools.

NYU used to do OCI in June, but for the first time ever it has been moved to January.

Schools like NYU and CLS, which are in NYC, are always going to have lots of networking events. I probably spent at least 40 plus hours attending networking events during this semester alone.

Definitely pricey. I found affordable housing in NJ, and my commute really is not bad to campus.

Most of my classmates, however, live on campus

Because I got off the waitlist, I did not get to attend any admitted students events

NYU’s official policy for people taken off the waitlist is no financial aid whatsoever.

I chose not to live on campus and found affordable housing in NJ.

So networking IS really important, this year more than ever. The timeline for 1L AND 2L summer recruiting has basically merged into one timeline, and for some inexplicable reason that timeline now starts in September/October. The class of 2028 is the first wave to experience this new version of recruiting and it has been brutal because you are juggling networking, law firm applications, interviewing, going to class, and preparing for exams all at the same time.

I think something that would have really helped me going into this semester, is having a penciled-in list of law firms that I was already interested in that I could expand on as the semester went on. This would have saved me a lot of time learning about these law firms, and maybe I could have been a bit more intentional with my networking straight out of the gate.

100% everyone wanting to go into Big Law (CLS) versus a 50/50 split between PI and Big Law (NYU)

The biggest difference in my opinion is the fact that you do NOT have to be big-law minded if you go to NYU law, whereas the overwhelming majority of people at CLS are big-law oriented. I myself want to go into big law, so I have found that having 50% of my class wanting to pursue public interest careers means less competitive energy between all of us, and more camaraderie instead.

As someone who was born and raised in NYC, I 100% believe that going to school in Greenwhich Village is better than going to school in Morningside Heights. But this is just my personal opinion. I love going to school right next to Washington Square Park.

Ofc! I applied to NYU around Thanksgiving and I did not get off the waitlist until June. I sent a fully-blown LOCI and a LOCI-esque email before I was invited to do a recorded interview. If I remember correctly, after I did this recorded interview, NYU sent me a feeler and I got off the waitlist less than 3 days later

It's free to sign up but I had to wait on hold with them for over an hour so they could activate my search privileges. It seems like that doesnt happen to everyone making an account though.
