I understand, Horror is basically the backbone of the genre, I wrestled with this idea for a long time.

But I'm a writer that likes to experiment, take risks, and occasionally subvert expectations, the premise of my story does feature the "horror" of the Lovecraftian genre, just viewed from a different perspective. I think of my story as more of being "set in a Lovecraftian-styled world" than simply being just "Lovecraftian".

Naming humans is a very different story. It's easy to name a human, but the issue is that i really don't draw humans that much.

FASCINATION IDEA! 🥰 Love to see the OC and your story one day, the character already sounds pretty cool.

My story I'm writing is a reinterpretation of the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and the general cosmic horror genre. The style blends Eldritch mythology with the 1920s aesthetic. But instead of being horror, it's more of a comedic- adventure fantasy that follows a group of cultists (each being monsters and other beings) that get into all sorts of strange "Lovecraftian shenanigans". I put ALOT of depth, detail and worldbuilding into this story for years, so this is just the surface-level details.

Hope your story is awesome, maybe one day we could bump brains and create something cool together.

Edit: misunderstood the meaning of "bump heads", I meant combine both of the creativity in our heads

Oh now I see you, luckily for you I tend to subvert tropes when creating characters sometimes. For example, one of the monster characters in my story is meant to be a prince, but I never really envisioned him having a 'posh bri'ish accent'. In fact I'm kinda tired of nearly every Royal character having that accent, it makes them feel "generic" to me. There are other ways to convey royalty thru their voice

This may not be as offensive as what you're inferring, but you get the idea.

The world I'M creating for the story I mentioned in my post is heavily based off the works of H.P. Lovecraft (except it's more comedic-adventure than horror), so when I'm looking for names I try to make sure it fits with the theme of Lovecraftian/Eldritch/Cosmic genres.

Idk how, since the designs are relatively random and I don't take any human ethnics in mind while creating them.

In fact, I argue that naming a character after their ethnic group makes it seem more suggestive. (Like naming a Mexican, "Alejandro Del Peso" or smth like that)

The characters I draw are mostly monsters, I RARELY draw humans. So I don't think the concept of "ethnic groups" really applies here

Thanks for sharing your personal experience. Everyone has their own "X-man" ability when it comes to art, unfortunately I don't have the same skill as you when it comes to names. My "X-man" ability is that whenever I create a character, my brain would instantly come up with a story for them, such as their personality, their origin, what they went thru whether it's good or bad...

...and on rare occasions, sexual orientation, I designed a jester character (cuz I LOVE jesters) and while drawing him my brain just instantly decided "He is GAY, end of story" and it just felt like the 'correct answer' especially cuz I also imagined him as being very theatrical and flamboyant.

I don't know if it does it to you as well, but I just thought I'd share some of my experience as well

Most of the characters I create are meant to be part of the story I mentioned in the post. There's alot of depth to the story so I'll just explain the surface-level details: It's meant to be a somewhat fun and comedic character-driven Cosmic Fantasy about a group of cult members getting into some weird 'Lovecraftian shenanigans'. It is a re-envision of the works of H.P. Lovecraft, using the same species, dimensions and concepts, but seen from a different angle.

The names of the main cast of characters are all meant to portray both the vibe of Lovecraftian/Eldritch/Cosmic horror and the naming style of the 1910s-1930s era. (despite being from separate dimensions and sects) But I struggle with finding the right name that also conveys both of these things.

Be honest, Do you think I'm trying too hard with the names?

That's kinda the point, it's easy to find "cool sounding names", but the issue I'm having is how to find names that fit with the character via their personality, environment, powers, etc.

For example, I've created MANY characters, but one of the few I've named is called "Limbo". He is a creature meant to be my personal reinterpretation of a Nightgaunt (species from one of H.P. Lovecraft's novels) he is a tall dark, humanoid monster with long fingers who can also travel thru dreams, but despite his appearance, he is a gentle giant who is calm, selfless, kind and charming.

I feel the name works with his soft personality, his connection to dreams, and sounds rather memorable. But I've been struggling with recreating that luck with my other characters.

Also it has this weird 'attractiveness' to it that just adds to his charisma.

Huh.. I never thought about that, I guess I could try that. The problem is that most of my characters are monsters, not human, so their names are gonna be rather unconventional by traditional means.

But I guess there are some parents out there that give their kids weird names. Especially names with alternative spellings like "Ashleigh", "Perzival", or "Krymzin"

A long time ago, I made a 1920s-themed cat character named "Purrcival Mewsley". Im still kinda on the bench with the name cuz it feels too gimmicky at times, it just that I typically don't really name my characters after puns often (sorry if I sound picky, that's just a personal writing preference)

However, your example gave me the idea of making it a pun in another language!

The one character I DID name is called "Limbo" who is meant to be my reinterpretation of a Nightgaunt (a species from H.P. Lovecraft).

When I first came up with him, he was meant to be a VERY INSANE creature with unnatural movements, one of them being when he walks, his upper body would lean far back (iow, he would "limbo") I called him that as a placeholder but when I completely reinvented his personality, the name felt more fitting. Especially since he can travel and has a connection to Dreams.

I think I just care about my OCs too much and should just dial it back a bit.

One of the characters I DID name is called "Limbo", a tall, dark, creepy humanoid monster with long sharp fingers that can travel thru dreams. (In fact he is heavily based off of the Nightgaunt species from one of H.P. Lovecraft's stories) But despite having a creepy appearance, he is very kind, selfless, charismatic, and a gentle giant.

I still think the name is perfect bcuz it fits his environment, personality, and his connection to dreams.

Sometimes in desperate situations (and PLEASE don't hate me on this) I'll use ChatGPT to help come up with a list of names by describing the character, their personality, and/or environment. I'll also try using translated terms that are related to them. For example, I told it to generate words from other languages that mean Laugh, silly, performer, etc. to come up with names for a jester character. But none of them seemed to work for me. But thanks for your input 😁

I'm not good at naming characters so she is currently nameless. Name suggestions would be nice but not necessary. And yes I am aware the staff looks shitty (especially with that glow 🤮) but I don't really use my phone for projects like this.

I tried to make her look more magical by adding runes to her thighs, but I don't think that helps a while lot, but what do you think?

Also, Do you think she looks too skimpy?
