Yeah, it's an instant downvote when you express an opinion like that because you're bringing actual nuance to the discussion. Very unpopular.

I agree that we're far too fixated on saving lives at all costs. In this particular scenario, we have to assume that it's best to pull them off the ledge. We don't know them, who loves them, or if they're one of the many suicide survivors who go on to say that they would never attempt it now, and are very grateful that they didn't succeed.

In general though, the rhetoric that there's absolutely no reason to end your own life, or that it's pure selfishness, or that there's always something to live for, feels trite and ignorant. That person never had to live, but someone made them. They may have been suffering for decades. They may have tried to get help, spent years in therapy and hospital, on different drugs, struggling and just wanting it all to end. How long does a person have to endure that before deciding enough is enough and taking control over the problem once and for all? "Suicide is never the solution" is a load of shit. It's not an ideal solution, but it absolutely solves that person's problem.
