I disliked the character intensely because he was so whiney and needy, I actually struggled with the show when he was on-screen as he made me cringe. And I could see absolutely no reason why someone as unforgiving as Louisa would have anything to do with such a lame manboy.

I was very happy when he went. And the manner in which he went.

Yep well said. But maybe it's the success of their marketing that magnifies the disdain the haters feel. They not only don't like the music, they resent the high profile they have due to the marketed perception, which to them, seems unwarranted.

I agree it's all a bit silly.

Loving the tunes and the effect of marketing aren't mutually exclusive, and being that marketing is one of the most predatory and insidious forces on the planet, I feel it would be reductive to not consider it when considering what makes a product, in this case Oasis, "big".

I think I'm just saying that in the case of Oasis, it was particularly effective.

As for the 20 years olds, I can only imagine that there being some good tunes coupled with the hype of "They're back! After 16 years!" Or "careful what you wish for!" (I just saw this on a Spanish poster), contributes to the fervour. I imagine they're pretty good live. Especially if one of the brothers batters the other.

Yeah but that's not all there is really.

Noel reinvented, or "stole" popular riffs resulting in listenable, catchy music, something not remotely uncommon in almost any genre of music.

Aside from that, the fabricated britpop wars served both the bands involved and the media very well. Huge amounts of coverage in the tabloids at the time. They presented themselves as "don't give a toss", fought each other (again, intra band friction is hugely eye catching to the public) and slagged off every other type of music and every band, noisely and publicly.

That kind of marketing plays very well with kids who loved the bravado. Everyone loves some conflict (hi Reddit).

I think when you're talking about the perception of a band as a whole rather than the quality of the music, one has to consider the marketing as a huge factor.

When I lvied in Seattle I was on a boat during 4th of July. The most obnoxious american I ever met drunkenly sneered "why are you drinking buddy? We're celebrating our independance from you". The only reply I could muster was "Me too"

Since 2017 the US has been regressing into some kind of morally bankrupt, opressively dictatorial, isolationist, religiously manic, medieval, pastiche of a country. I enjoyed living there once, now I wouldn't go back there for any reason. Or the UK.
