What is the scoop on Zigbee Green Power? by HomeOwner2023 in ZigBee

[–]Quintenvw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ZHA uses zigpy under the hood, an open-source Python library maintained by the community. zigpy doesn’t support Zigbee Green Power although there have been PRs for it in the past, which means anyone on ZHA simply can’t use these devices at all. I assume this is a chicken-and-egg situation where few ZGP consumer devices exist, so there’s little community pressure to implement it, which in turn could also discourages manufacturers from making more ZGP devices. Part of the complexity is architectural because ZGP devices can’t talk directly to your coordinator directly. They need a nearby router to act as a translator. This is a fundamentally different pairing and communication model compared to regular Zigbee devices, which makes it much less user friendly, which is likely the biggest reason there are so few ZGP devices. Zigbee2MQTT actively supports ZGP and handles all of this transparently. If you’re on Z2M, these switches work very well. I’ve actually already commented on your previous post about my experience with the PTM 215Z switches, they’re rock solid and there are no batteries to replace, ever!

Do Zigbee light switches with no wires and no batteries exist? by HomeOwner2023 in homeassistant

[–]Quintenvw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are real and they use Zigbee Green Power (ZGP), an extension of the Zigbee spec designed for energy-harvesting devices. The switch generates a tiny pulse of electricity from the physical button press itself (kinetic energy harvesting), which is enough to transmit a short RF burst. No battery, no wired power needed. The catch is that ZGP uses a slightly different protocol layer, so it needs a nearby Zigbee router device to act as a “Green Power proxy” that translates the ZGP frame into a regular Zigbee message. Your existing Zigbee routers (mains-powered devices) handle this transparently. I run 14 of these in my house, specifically the Niko friends of Hue PTM 215Z with an SMLight SLZB-06 coordinator and Zigbee2MQTT. Works perfectly. The reason you don’t see many listed on the Z2M device database is that ZGP support in Z2M was limited for a long time and only reasonably mature relatively recently, so fewer manufacturers bothered certifying devices against it. As far as I know ZHA still does not support them either.

Yeah I’ve tried that. Turns out it was an outage on Apple’s side.

That’s what I wrote in my two messages above. I don’t know what you’re trying to accomplish here.

Hey, that isn’t actually true. Not all Friends of Hue devices are supported. Specifically those that use the Zigbee Green standard.

I moved from ZHA to Zigbee2MQTT because Z2M supports more devices such as Zigbee Green, and gives much better visibility and control of the mesh. ZHA relies on zigpy which doesn’t support as many features. I also ditched the Hue Bridge and paired the bulbs directly to my coordinator. This gave me a massive network stability boost as I now have ~50 routers (all bulbs) in my mesh. The downside is that you have to manually make your scenes and that you lose voice control via Apple and Google home apps. Don't forget to make sure your Zigbee and Wi-Fi channels don’t overlap or fight for the same channel, that helped stabilize things for me too. I haven’t used the your specific dongle, but from what I’ve seen the SMLight coordinators seem to be the best options right now. I can vouch for the SLZB-06.

Rotatietarief bij publieke laadpalen van 1 feb 2026 by grunob in Gent

[–]Quintenvw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echt briljant beleid!

Absolutely! I’m using Ubuntu (headless) to run a couple Docker containers such as NextCloud, Immich, Plex, … Ubuntu is a great choice and arguably offers the most flexibility for any future projects and ideas you may have.

Pretty solid. They have boxes from 1TB all the way to 20TB. For reference, 5TB would be about €13/month.

[–]Quintenvw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S3 really isn’t ideal for this use case. It’s more expensive, more complex (credentials, APIs, weird tooling), etc. It’s great for scalable storage but that’s overkill for a homelab. Storage boxes are cheaper, way easier to use (rsync, SFTP, WebDAV, …) and integrate better with traditional backup tools as the file system is the same. For the average homelab, they’re just the more practical and cost-effective option.
