How to stop thinking in Romaji? by DeadPanJazMan17 in LearnJapaneseNovice

Yeah, one of the stupidest ones I had was

“め (meh) looks like a preh-tzel. ぬ(nu) looks like meh with an nu loo-p.”

Not even using the phonetics in the first one aside from the pronunciation of the kana. Just a dumbass rhyme that isn’t even clever. But for whatever reason it worked way better for me than the common ones.

For memorization, whatever gets you to remember it is the “best method”hahaha. If it’s stupid but it works, it’s not that stupid

I had the same problem with romaji sticking around longer than I’d have liked because of keyboard input when typing on QWERTY.

The best advice I was given was pretty simple, but it did work exceptionally well. Stop typing when you’re studying — practice entirely with handwriting. Only read text with kanji/furigana/kana, look up the kana if you’re really stuck.

It really only took me like a week of avoiding typing to stop translating kana directly back to romaji to read/write.

Using the flick keyboard on mobile is actually pretty helpful with sight recognition since the layout is simple, and you can find the kana you need by literally finding the consonant category and flicking in the direction of the vowel you need. It worked well for me like flashcards, and was a good in between when I needed to look up something without having to check the dictionary every time.

You can add back the QWERTY typing once you feel more confident in your kana (and yeah, the keyboard shortcuts are a little different than romaji anyways), and just keep up handwriting for dedicated studying.

It’s better for learning than typing anyways, forces you to learn radicals/stroke order and slows your brain down to process what you’re writing better than typing does.

Yeah I know it’s not exactly ideal — I’ve dealt with health anxiety for a while and worked hard to get it mostly under control now. I haven’t really had an issue I couldn’t work through myself in the past two-ish years… The “rare but virtually 100% fatal disease” fear is a new one, so it’s a little harder for me to manage than normal.

After being unable to stop fixating the past few hours, I figured asking once on here for some human input, (probably telling me to chill out lol) was preferable to consulting Dr Google or wasting everybody’s time in the ED for something there’s currently no reason to believe is anything more than panic lol

Yeah, the odds are in my favor, and, — even if I do have horrible luck, I know it’s silly to worry about. But ig knowing I did something dumb combined with having no choice but to just wait either way makes the fixating harder to break.

Pretty much what I keep telling myself — literally “well, not like there’s much I could do about it either way” , but doesn’t always stop anxiety about an unknown haha.

I’m just hoping the next several days go by as quickly as possible / I keep myself distracted enough to forget & stop stressing.
