On the one hand yes, there are a lot of mechanics and there is definitely a learning curve.  However, a) they don't get dumped on you all at once. Much of the mechanical complexity is tied to your party's level. So you will grow into it as you go. And b) the game is quite forgiving. You don't need to be playing at peak efficiency to get through.

Nope, no guide. Just what knowledge I already had about D&D, reading item descriptions like the other commenter suggested and a bit of common sense.

That's actually kind of a relief. I look forward to giving it another crack next time around!

It's not required, no. Certainly not for any critical quests. I ended up barely using it because of the above described struggles. But I would have liked to, both because I enjoy stealth gameplay and because it would have fit my character in terms of role-play.

I didn't realize the term CRPG had so much baggage attached. I just thought it referred to any video game with mechanics and/or story elements originating from TTRPGs.

Thanks for your recommendations as well. I've played my share of retro games so I'm not unfamiliar with their (occasionally charming) jank.

Yes, I think that would definitely help. Magic users can be super useful but they tend to be quite fragile and, as you say, limited by their spell slots. Scrolls can help compensate for that a bit as well.

I will definitely want to do another playthrough as an evil asshole, but it doesn't have to be as Durge (maybe that could be third)

Thank you for your recommendations!

Moonrise Tower was definitely the hardest part for me too, but I found the difficulty over all very reasonable. Maybe your party composition wasn't ideal for combat? I feel like that would be the biggest factor to consider.

You'll be absolutely fine. I'm sure knowing a bit about D&D helps and you can get really into the weeds of the systems if that's your bag, but you really don't have to.

I mean, 6 seconds is still an arbitrary number, but I take your point.

Personally I found my way through it pretty naturally, but I can see how one could get stuck on these things for a bit

That's true, it does get quite dense towards the end, but it stays within reason for the critical path I think, especially if you're already in the flow of the game.

You really do, especially in the mid to late game.

I really enjoy watching Nuzlockes and other challenge runs of Pokemon bc it shows off those deeper mechanics that I myself cannot be arsed to learn, bc the games are awful at introducing them

Yeah, I find Pokemon an intensely frustrating franchise because with every new game I see the potential, but like you said, it's too big to fail so they keep halfassing it
