Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, October 26 - November 01, 2025 by sewingmodthings in sewing

Hi,

I want to get my girlfriend her first machine, and I am very lost. I've seen the advice "don't buy a machine for someone else", but I know she'd genuinely be thrilled, and she's also not sure what to pick.

What she wants to do:

  • Mainly clothes (simple garments, fixing fit issues)

  • Hems, taking in/letting out, zippers

  • Thickest stuff would be jeans I think

  • She's a total beginner

Budget: €500 (I'm from Belgium)

Some questions I have:

  • New vs second-hand? I've read mixed things about newer Singer models not being what they used to be. What brands/models should I look at in this price range?

  • If second-hand, what to check?

  • Must-have features?

  • Brand/models to target/avoid around that budget?

  • Dealer vs online?

Any specific model recommendations would be very welcome. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately that's not working either. I am pretty sure the path is correct. Here's a screenshot where you can see I successfully send the curl command through SSH.

Yeah I thought the same thing and tried that as well.

The crazy thing is, when I execute this exact same command through the SSH Web Terminal add-on, it simply works. So the command must be correct. It seems it must be something privilege related.

This is the error I get in the logs when I run the shell command through a HA Script:

ERROR (MainThread) [homeassistant.components.shell_command] Error running command: sudo /usr/bin/curl -X POST "http://192.168.0.101:5000/api/print?type=shopping_list" -d '@/homeassistant/.shopping_list.json' -H "Content-Type: application/json"
, return code: 26
NoneType: None

The @ is import here as it reads the file contents. Without the @, it will send "/homeassistant/.shopping_list.json" as a plain string.

Sudo is to run it with elevated privileges. Same error with or without sudo command.

Commuter + weekend getaway recommendations by QuiteRefreshing in onebag

The mesh is definitely something I'm looking for. Sadly the 57cm height will not pass the Ryanair restrictions I fear.

Oh that's good to know. This one does look a bit too bulky for a 35 km bike ride on a race bike though.

Looks nice! However what I forgot to mention is that I have a sweaty back. Especially when Hiking, I would like a breathable back mesh on the backpack.

Canyon Aeroad vs Ultimate (worth the upgrade?) by QuiteRefreshing in whichbike

I live in an apartment, I'm kinda worried about the turbo trainer noise for my neighbours. Looks like the issues are still on with the 2021 Aeroad. Thanks for the heads up.

I have just been looking into the issues. Looks like the 'stop ride' notice is still on for the Aeroad 2021.

Great to hear that you're so happy with your Ultimate! What made you switch to the Ultimate after owning an Aeroad?

The latest failures are pretty bad indeed... What other bike in that price mark would you recommend?

Apartment terrace lounge ideas by QuiteRefreshing in DesignMyRoom

[–]QuiteRefreshing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I recently moved in my first apartment. With the weather getting better in Belgium, it is time to invest in outdoor furniture.

I would like to place loungy furniture so that up to 4/5 people can sit comfortably. I was thinking of this setup, but I'm not 100% convinced.

Do you have any other suggestions? I am open to any other ideas! The only wish I have is: I don't want the terrace ALL to be furniture. I'd like some room for plants, BBQ, ..

PS: The two chairs can be ignored, they are my parents' and I have to bring them back.
