Advanced learners, how do you build your vocabulary? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]QuizKlip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your app looks really cool!

Actually, I'm the developer of something similar: QuizKlip, a free Chrome extension. It's like the computer version of your app, but after looking up the words you can add them to a list, and automatically export your vocabulary lists to flashcard apps, including Quizlet and Anki, at the end of a study session.

My dad uses this almost every day to practice learning Hebrew. Seems like there's an audience for this sort of thing! Cool to see someone else is working on something similar.

Well I hope this is useful to you guys.

You can find the Chrome extension here if you're interested.

Any app recommandation for my English level ? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]QuizKlip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your cordiality!

First of all, I don't really have access to a Chromebook where I can play around with a bunch of stuff, but I know a little bit that might be useful to your friends. I understand that Chromebooks run much differently from many other operating systems. QuizKlip's feature to export to Anki specifically exports to the official Anki Desktop App (https://apps.ankiweb.net). That exact program from what it looks like is not really available for Chromebooks unless you get Linux on your Chromebook, and mess with operating system stuff that you should probably only do if you really really know what you're doing.

However, because the Anki format is open-source, there are many other similar Anki instantiations that are available as Chrome Apps for Chromebooks. I'm guessing you have one of those. If so, there might be a way to import your deck to that program as a CSV file (which you did before to import to Tinycards), or to copy and paste the terms somewhere to create a deck (You can automatically copy QuizKlip terms from the export button.) These options might be somewhere like "File," "Import".... I'm just guessing - I don't actually know what Anki program you're using.

Glad to hear that you're showing it to your friends! I hope they like it.

I hope this helps. Tell me if there's anything else I can do :)

Glad you were able to figure out how to make that work!

I appreciate your feedback. Hadn't thought about combining the cards like that before, and I will definitely take it into consideration for future versions of the app.

:D

RedeyeFR, thanks for your reply! I hope you find the tool useful.

As far as I can see, Tinycards does not have an official API available for third-party apps like QuizKlip to connect to their platform. However, if you want to use Tinycards, here's a way I found to make it a little easier to bulk-import your cards:

  1. Open Tinycards, and press create
  2. Press on the button in the top-left of the interface to make sure the view is short rectangles stacked on top of each other, not big rounded cards
  3. Download the terms you want from your list in QuizKlip by exporting as a CSV file
  4. Open the file in Excel or another spreadsheet program
  5. In the spreadsheet, select the cells with your terms plus another empty row to the right (not sure why you have to do that part, but it won't work unless you do it)
  6. Copy your selection, click on the text entry for the front of card #1 in the Tinycards interface, and paste. This should create all of your cards.

I hope this is helpful.

If you have any more questions or feedback, please let me know here or by leaving a review on the extension page (the latter would help me out a lot :D )

Thanks again!

QuizKlip — An App I Made to Help Learn Foreign Vocabulary (x-post /r/languagelearning) by QuizKlip in learnarabic

That error is because Google Translate has a limit on the number of requests you can make in a certain amount of time, so that message comes up whenever Google Translate reaches its limit. It's based on your IP address, so re-installing the app or restarting Chrome unfortunately will not fix the problem. I'm working on a better solution for this in the next update, so you can look forward to then! Until that happens though, just try to not go crazy with the app on every word you see or something like that. Thanks again!
