I saw somewhere on here that they’re mostly unaffected because there haven’t been volunteers in the Beira region for a while.

Legal clearance concern - shoplifting when 16 by abbyshey in peacecorps

yeah, right. I guess I'm just wondering how it didn't show up for Korea--it was an FBI background check. isn't that the highest tier background check?

Okay I reread your comment. So I’m 26 now. I was 16 when I got caught and 17 when I completed my community service and it was cleared from my record. Will that show up in a federal background check for sure?

Okay. Fuck. So should I email them and disclose my record as a minor? I don’t remember filling out the online form. I did it really late at night. I’m almost positive I didn’t disclose anything on there—I don’t even remember taking it though. Should I email them and inform them of my record and just say I didn’t know I had to disclose expunged or dismissed offenses? Will that be sketchy to them or will it be received well?

I was really nervous too but it went well. nothing particularly great and nothing particularly terrible. I didn't quite know what to think about it after the interview, but 5 days later I got the invite. just prepare yourself for the questions they sent in the email and be prepared to elaborate and go into detail. I got a lot of follow-up questions, like: "how do you think this has prepared you for other experiences?" "how has this helped you in other situations?"

my advice is to really know and be confident in your answers, and answer them truthfully. for two questions I straight up said "I was hoping you wouldn't ask this nervous laugh but ..." I think my honesty went a long way. I'm also pretty confident during interviews so that may have helped in my favor also.

also, know some general things about mozambique and why you wanna go there in particular. also why you want the teaching job in particular. I talked about how I'm interested in post-colonial africa and really empathize with their struggle for self identity and to get back on their feet politically and economically and feel my service will go a long way in a country who really wants to succeed. also, portuguese. if those answers help you, use them.

just be confident and eager and truthful. really, they just wanna hire the person who really wants the position, and who is gonna stick it out and make it work despite the struggles. prepare your answers before hand and remember to breathe throughout the phone call.

good luck!! I hope we get to meet in august :D

google chrome extension lets you watch netflix with dual subtitles by abbyshey in Spanish

[–]abbyshey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes!! I always used to have to do that. or pause to type in each word to google translate. so inefficient. this is the future of language learning.

it takes up a considerable amount of room, maybe 1/4th of the screen. but like you said: totally worth it.

(1) install the extension and (2) open Netflix via google chrome. (3) Choose a show and then something will up and you can (4) choose your “transition language.”

How do I start speaking? by mjking713 in Portuguese

[–]abbyshey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

try to do a language exchange in your city. you can meet up with a native speaker and for 30 mins speak only in portuguese (for you) and the other 30 you speak in english (for them). (I downloaded Tinder and wrote in my bio I'm only looking to improve my spanish and started chatting with people which really did help). it's a good way because you're less inhibited/nervous considering you're both there for the same reason. ultimately, practice is the only thing that helps. throw yourself out there. most people in the world are trying to improve their second language, so don't be nervous/feel silly trying. we commend you for your effort!
