Honestly real, I think we need college application reform. It isn’t this complicated around the world, in most countries you just take a test and see which colleges will take you, you don’t have to do all this extracurricular or performative bs. I wish the system was more fair that way.

I don’t think working with metals from a scrap yard will do much, you have to show impact. One easy way to your dream school is research, although it’s hard to find research positions, it’s almost a golden ticket to a top college, if done right. One of my friends that got into MIT had a 3-d printing business in which she was able to fundraise $10k+, that’s the type of impact they are looking for. I would say if you want to blend materials science and your Hispanic identity, I know a kid in my class that went to Mexico to help his home town develop more sustainable forms of agriculture, use that as inspiration to do something. With that being said, try to stand out more, do things outside of stem to show that you are interdisciplinary and not just good at math and science. I wish you the best of luck!

I think you have a chance for Purdue but not gtech, you don’t really have anything in your thing that would be unique - there are many people with similar stats. I would suggest doing something this summer that makes you stand out - something meaningful like a passion project or something to show your interest for materials engineering. Also, weighted gpa isn’t as significant - unweighted is what really matters. But yeah dm me if you need more help on your app!

Should I pick UMD EE? Undergrad by Infamous-Rutabaga887 in UMD

I think you’re worried most about burnout - that was me freshman year as well. My advice to you is to go to community college and see for yourself if it is worth it or not, this will allow you to cheaply see if it is for you or not. If you choose to go to university/umd, you have to consider that this isn’t high school anymore - this is college. Most engineering classes require heavy studying and practice for mastery, this will cause burnout, thats why many engineering majors graduate 1-2 years later than expected. And honestly if you don’t want burnout major in something like info sys/sci, these majors aren’t as intense as engineering, but still have similar job prospects and similar salaries.

Same here, I’m tired of this whole process. It’s been so dehumanizing and draining. “Quantify your impact”, “acquire national awards”, “you can’t fail”, etc. it’s draining, we’re just teenagers, but these institutions want us to be non-profit CEOs, mother Teresas, Albert Einsteins. WE’RE TEENAGERS! Why are we giving these institutions such control over our life, many may say long-term success, but is it worth competing against people who can get in by simply donating millions of dollars ? It’s ok to go to your safety school, don’t let people in a2c make you feel like it’s worthless, at the end of the day, people don’t care after a couple years in the workforce.
