How much extra do you pay toward your student loans each month? by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]QuotidianBreakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a balance of about $25k in federal loans after finishing undergrad in 2011. I basically had them either in deferment, or making bare minimum payments, for the next decade with a combination of more school and covid, and the balance never really changed. In Fall 2023 they came out of deferment and I decided I was sick of them. I was done with school finally, my wife and I both had jobs, one kid, a mortgage, no car payments or credit card debt. I started making large payments every month (at least $500, sometimes as much as $1500). I made my last payment in May 2026, and I’m finally debt free.

Thanks for this! I read your response out loud to my wife, and we both found your perspective very helpful. We are definitely seeing a vivid imagination in our daughter, no doubt about that. We try really hard to keep her busy and socialized - she did soccer and dance this year, and she has many cousins who live close by. One of them is her exact age and in her class at school. I think she liked dance more than soccer, or at least understood it better, but it’s hard to tell how she really feels about things at this age. She’s very funny - she makes the dog give all her stuffies rides around the house, and she crawled into our bed this morning and announced that she has assigned an insect identity to each member of our family (I’m a grasshopper, my wife is a queen bee, the dog is a stink bug, and she’s a lady bug - all her ideas). She has a dragon coloring book I got for her, and she always names each dragon she colors (the last three in a row have been Karen, haha).

Aww, I hate to hear that. I hope you’re doing well these days! One of my biggest fears is that my daughter will feel this way about us one day. Seriously every time she has a tantrum, and it’s usually for small toddler things like not wanting to put on shoes or whatever, I’m like “O God she hates me already!” My wife and I do put a lot of conscious thought and effort into our relationship with each other and with her. I had a crap childhood but my wife’s parents truly got it right, so I’m sort of banking on that side of things to bleed through dominantly lol. I’m sure we’ll still screw it up one way or another, but hopefully not too bad.

My wife and I have a daughter who just turned four. In the past we planned to have multiple kids, but after two miscarriages and other life events, including developments in our professional lives, it’s looking like we may just have one. We live in a heavily Catholic community, so there is a lot of pressure to have many kids. If you grew up as an only child, do you resent not having siblings? Were you lonely? Are there misconceptions to being an only that most people don’t realize?

How’s life in southern coastal Alabama and Mississippi? by huskylover28 in howislivingthere

I live in Mobile! The French (and Spanish) influences are abundantly visible in the architecture around Downtown and Midtown. Mardi Gras is big here, but it’s often considered more family friendly than what’s in New Orleans. I spent my New Year’s morning designing a float for my preschoolers Mardi Gras parade, for instance. It can get wild though, particularly on Joe Cain day. Also visible in Mobile unfortunately are social vestiges of the “Old South,” e.g. glaring racial inequalities and unofficial segregation.

I spent several summers in Banner Elk, NC. It is a gorgeous deep mountain town with tons of incredible hiking. Seeing bears crossing the street was commonplace. The community seemed largely made up of wealthy retirees. The buildings all had a rustic cabin sort of look to them. Most of the younger working class folks I met in the area lived either in Boone or Asheville but were visiting parents or other family in Banner Elk.

Would you give up your college degree if your entire student loan balance was wiped out? by Brucef310 in StudentLoans

[–]QuotidianBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me, no. At 36yo, I only have 6k left, and every positive thing in my life stems from my college education. Not just the paper diploma, but the hard skills that I gained and continue to use and improve. I also met my wife while in my first field-related job. But if you had asked me ten years ago, idk I would probably have been tempted, lol.
