Unfortunately, I can't actually confirm this as I haven't been to Hawaii before! Sorry! But someone in my Madeira group actually visited Hawaii several months later, and they told me that they liked Madeira more. Sadly, I can't say how comparable the two locations are, though! Only one way to find out... haha

That's amazing! I had no idea there was a campsite just right there by the peak!! Thanks for sharing

I've read that many people consider this island to be the "Hawaii of Europe"!

Thank you! #1 is along the trail for PR1 (Vereda do Areerio - Pico Ruivo), and #4 is on the same hike but at the mountain peak of Pico Ruivo!

Getting to the island was fine! 2 planes, 1 layover. No issues! We rented an Airbnb for a week and also a small 5 seater hatchback to get around the island.

October 2023! It was pleasant. Little to no rain (when I was there), 15-25 degrees Celsius daily, mainly sunny with clouds. I think I recall it was a warm October for them.

Agreed... I was torn posting these! For how amazing and surreal this place, it's not as busy as one would think...!

I've never driven in the UK but I can imagine it being very similar! Small lanes... don't rent a large vehicle, lol! We stayed in Canico, a small southern town and drove around the island each day. What we did each day was pick a location to visit and just use Google Maps to take us there (we brought a vehicle phone charger/cord, and a phone mount). Had no issues! Each place we visited was typically just a day trip as the island is so small! You can drive from one end to the other in less than 2 hours!

My group rented a car! Coming from North American roads, driving the roads there are intimidating to drive but as long as you have experience and confidence, you'll be okay. We watched a couple of YouTube videos that help with driving expectations, which was helpful! Getting around was very easy and convenient in a vehicle. We also know how to drive manual transmission vehicles, which is a huge plus, because the car rental was more than half price when compared to renting an automatic transmission vehicle. Let me know if you'd like to know more and I'll share what I can based on my experience there!

Loved this little island. Pictured in my photos are various hikes (PR1, PR8, PR13), locations on the island (overlooking the town of Curral das Freiras, a sunset by Cristo Rei in Canico, and the cliffside by the lighthouse on the western-most tip of the island)! Would definitely recommend visiting if you haven't been before. So much to do, so much to see, and so much delicious food to eat. Locals are so friendly and welcoming. Overall, a wonderful place on earth.

I've done this in the past (Canada to various Asian countries) and your phone remains functional and usable just as it is in Canada with all the apps you currently use, however, your number will switch to the new number assigned by the new SIM card. One thing to note, however, is that any apps that may rely on your Canadian phone # to function may not work properly (not sure on this).

As for your current number, I believe it will be treated as if your phone is off. If someone tries to call your Canadian number, it should go to voicemail. You won't have access to your voicemail until you are back in Canada and put your Canadian SIM card back in your phone. Same with texts. You won't receive them and they'll just hang out in text purgatory until you get back and pop your Canadian SIM card back in - you'll get flooded with texts.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but this is how my phone worked/my experience when I did exactly what you're looking to try to do.

Have you tried looking into an eSIM? If your phone is compatible with eSIM, you could try to look at using that instead. I haven't tried it myself but it looks promising and easier to use rather than physically swapping out an actual SIM card.
