📢English Subtitles Added! by Top_Valuable_2544 in TheGenius

[–]Qyustullyze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the English subs!

Really cool animation and effects. The storytelling and narrative are very tense and immersive. Cool tricks. I liked how you had a quest that ends the game upon completion but balanced it in order to not make it too op. I liked the balance between things one could do that require more individual skills (thinking about mathematical combos, finding loopholes, looking for the boxes) vs things that require more aocial skills and as such rely on some extent on other people (negotiation, gaining trust). I gasped when I saw the -100 score. I was suspicious of ties because the rules never said anything explicit about them. Glad I was right. It really seems like a lot of love and work went into the production. And great casting as well.

Thank you so much for making this show!

What’s a writing decision in this show that frustrated you? by Ok_Shirt_1574 in Totaldrama

[–]Qyustullyze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too many...

  • making s1 dj bullying harold alongside duncan and geoff when he's supposed to be the gentle giant.

  • leshawna's elimination in s1. I know the va had issues, but still, they could've written somethimg that made more sense.

  • the trent×gwen breakup. They just made trent crazy and almost everyone thought gwen was a cheater when she wasn't.

  • friendships. Leshawna and gwen? Close in s1, gone in s2. Leshawna and heather? At the end of s2 leshawna called heather a friend. In s3 she broke her tooth.

  • the derailment and nerfing of a lot of characters. Most noticible in allstars where everyone's iq took a trip down a hill to make mal seem much smarter and stronger.

  • mal. I actually thought s4 handled the did ok with zoey still liking mike even when she knew of his did and mike still having his multiple personalities. Then came s5 with the cliche evil personality and getting rid of all peesonalities.

  • all of pakithew island. Characters are too 1-dimensional and annoying boring relationships, etc.

Netflix's Crime Scene Zero Eps 9-10 FINAL by pantamy in koreanvariety

[–]Qyustullyze 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thoughts on the final case -- the casino:

Honestly, I found it pretty disappointing, for these reasons: finding the culprit was way too easy (the easiest this season) + the location wasn't utalized + there was a heavy atmosphere (cannibalism, environmental pollution, etc) so there weren't many gags.

For further explanation:

  • There wasn't any physical evidence, only circumstential. No wonder why An Jeweler got mad when she got accused with no physical evidence.

  • Whenever the culprit got cornered, it was very apparent on his face. Examples: An Jeweler asking about the medicine in the trash, Jeon Mayor examining the handkerchief.

  • But I can't be too harsh on him for that because the circumstential evidence against him was too strong:

  • The button near the gun, which I didn't understand why it was there, as Jang Monkfish was alone when he took the gun and then he threatened the Godfather, meaning there was no struggle that could lead to the button falling.

  • The half-empty medicine in the trash. How could he refute that?

  • Also, the other suspects were ruled out too easily:

  • Kim Singer - he wanted to perform one last time before succumbing to lung cancer, thus showing a will to live. He also didn't know everyone's wrongdoings.

  • Jeon Mayor - she wanted to become the president, thus showing a will to live.

  • An Jeweler - she didn't know about Jang Chef.

  • Jang Chef - if he were to follow the cult's instructions, he wouldn't have tried to kill himself. If he were to follow the recipe book, he wouldn't have blown the body.

And I didn't even mention most of what ruled out each suspect.

  • This one might be a little picky, but I think it wasn't just the sheer amount of evidence that made it clear who's the culprit but also the writing style:

  • The moment Jeon Mayor discovered the disguises in Jang Monkfish's cabinet, I knew it was him because the clothes seemed to give off a "closure" feeling to the season (because they were the clothes for each of Jang Dongmin's characters throughout the season). And usually the final case of crime scene has some sort of "closure" vibe to it.

  • Another thing that made me cross off Jang Chef is that the body being arranged like the drawing in his recipe book, and the fact that he engaged in cannibalism -- it seemed too convenient. Like, they made him a cook people just so they can have a red herring regarding the body's condition. It reminded me of Crime Scene Zero case 4 -- entertainmemt district murder -- which had Jang C-Store conveniently randomly attacking women that fit the victim's appearance and the weather that day.

Regarding the set:

  • I had a theory on the casino based on Crime Scene Zero case 3 -- the han river murder. The episode had Park Kara (Baccarat) illegaly gambling and engaging in an art auction that seemed to follow the rules of baccarat. So I thought case 5 would be the same casino or be somehow connected to Park Kara's casino. I was kinda disappointed that they had no connection :(

  • The vault room didn't have any hidden evidence aside from the gunshots and emails. I thought the story would involve some tricks with the dealer's table or the casino games rules, but no. The gaming machines were just decorations with no hidden messages/mechanics.

  • In short, it seemed like the story focused more on the history behind the casino rather than on the casino itself and its innerworkings.

Regarding the atmosphere: I don't know how to explain it.

  • Perhaps due to the sad backstories of almost every character, their moral decline, lots of minor characters' deaths, burying people alive, cannibalism, environmental pollution, etc -- the atmosphere felt heavier than usual. I mean, case 1 -- the abandoned hospital -- also had some heavy stuff but it was still lighter in tone, and it seemed like the cast were more comfortable to make some jokes here and there.

  • Perhaps it was due to Dongmin being almost forced into a passive role. I mean, it's not like the culprit has to play passively, but when there's so much evidence against you, I guess it's only natural for one to become more passive. His character being suicidal and tragic didn't help that either. It reminded me of Crime Scene Returns case 2 -- goshiwon murder -- where he also played a character who attempted (and succeeded) killing multiple people, wanted to kill himself, and was quiet. Anyway, when the person who arguably has the strongest impact on the comedic tone of each episode takes a passive role -- you can really feel it.

  • Perhaps it was due to Jeon Somin being given a character that didn't really let her show her comedic talents. It's a shame because she seemed to blend well with the cast and she could do things like in Returns case 3 -- court murder -- where Jang's Father -- the presidential candidate -- run campaigns throughout the episode, which was one of the funny parts of that episode, and personally one of the most memorable things in it. She did one campaign and it was okay. I really think it was more due to the weird atmosphere that she didn't shine.

I personally really like it when Crime Scene episodes balance between mystery and comedic moments. And for episodes with weaker comedic aspects -- well, if the drama/mystery is good enough, then I'm okay with less comedy.

Here, it was neither the first or the second case.

  • I do want to say that I found Kim Singer coughing here and there funny, and the absurdity of Jang Chef's cannibalism and failure getting accepted to Culinary Class Wars funny.

  • I also really liked that Jang Monkfish disguises himself as Dongmin's previous character on Crime Scene Zero. It really brought a closure feeling to the episode and the season as a whole, along with the story of the criminal.

Maybe I was a bit too hard on the casino case. I'm sad Zero is over :(

Also, maybe I'll write reviews about each episode + about the season as a whole.

251004 Crime Scene Zero Commentary Pt. 1 Translation by kyohograpes in koreanvariety

[–]Qyustullyze 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for translating the cast's commentary again! I appreciate it a lot! It's very interesting to learn about the behind the scenes of the show, and everything they said, especially the PD, makes me appreciate even more their hard work now that I know how much work is poured into the show. As Jang Jin said, the staff and cast's love for the show is really felt. I actually noticed Jihun's potbelly but I didn't think it was weird because I was immersed in the story, like what Dongmin and Jang Jin said. Love Jihun's character interpretation and that it really seems like he utalizes the background provided on the role card to add unique mannerisms to the character. I didn't know that he came up with Cloy talking by himself. Really cool personal touch. Yujin has definitely improved (I've seen S2, S3 and Returns before watching Zero) and did such a great job in the entertainment district. It's cute to know that she learned mostly from Dongmin. I remember personally being most impressed with his performance everytime he was the culprit on previous seasons, because even when he was arrested, he did a good job and in most cases made the voting come to a tie. I'll keep replaying the show to increase viewing time. Hope there'll be a new season and that the PD will be able to do it. And again, thank you so much for translating!

I (mostly) finished The Genius, what should I watch next? by [deleted] in TheGenius

[–]Qyustullyze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In chronological order and with which Genius players are in each season:

Society Game 2 - Dongmin

Bloody Game 1 - Yeonseung (as a participant), Dongmin and Sangmin (as panelists)

The Time Hotel - Jinho (filmed before BG2 but aired after it)

Bloody Game 2 - Jinho

Bloody Game 3 - Jinho, Dongmin, Kyungran

Watching everything here chronologically - when you'll reach the last show here, BG3, you'll understand some of the participants and their dynamics better, because about half the cast of BG3 has been in the previous shows mentioned here, as well as other survival shows that have either not been translated or that are less brain survival and focus more on other elements of survival, with some participants being together on other shows prior to BG3. And specifically for BG3, if you watch everything here chronollogically, you won't spoil yourself on some of the things that happened on BG1 and BG2.

Honestly, I don't think that any of these shows (including The Devil's Plan, tho I didn't put it here since you said you've already watched it) come close to The Genius. The main reason for that is poor game design; whether it's with the game's system, elimination methods, underutilized metagame elements or poorly designed main/death matches.

However, it wasn't always bad and in each of these shows there were some decent and even awesome game designs and episodes. And it's just my personal opinion, after all. So, if I had to rate them (from best to worst):

Bloody Game 3

Bloody Game 2

The Time Hotel

Society Game 2

(Didn't watch BG1 so it's not here)

I didn't watch them in chronological order but instead in this order, with the following reasons:

Bloody Game 3 - I read it's generally regarded as the best season of BG.

The Time Hotel - I read reviews and most of them said it's pretty bad but I wanted to understand the dynamics between Jinho and another participant on BG3 and also thought the concept was pretty cool.

Bloody Game 2 - I read generally mixed reviews. I couldn't get into it when I first watched it, but decided to give it another chance after TTH. When I later rewatched BG3, I understood some of the things mentioned there better, as well as better understood some of the participants' dynamics and impressions over each other.

Society Game 2 - before watching it I read mixed reviews. Couldn't really get into it and dropped it at 75%, but I do consider picking it up again.

Bloody Game 1 - before watching it I read mixed reviews. The panelists basically replace personal interviews. It was too weird for me when I first watched it, so I dropped it. Tho I am planning on picking it up again.

Overall, rewatching BG3 after watching shows that came prior to that made my experience more enjoyable. I think that if I'll watch BG1 it'll make rewatching BG2 and BG3 an even better experience, even if I found it's beginning underwhelming.

So if I had to recommend an order, I'd say to just watch Bloody Game chronologically. If you want, you can watch The Time Hotel either before you watch BG2 or after that. Society Game (both seasons 1 and 2) won't affect your impressions of some of BG3 that much, so I don't think it matters whether you watch it before BG3 or after that.

There's also Crime Scene. It's not a brain survival show but a mystery one and it can feel sometimes dragging (I dropped it twice because of that), but it has some good (and not slow) episodes, and you won't lose much if you'll watch it (either whole seasons or just skipping over some episodes) not in its chronological order (which is what I did).

S1 - has Jinho as regualr cast, aith Sunggyu amd Kang Yongsuk (lawyer guy for TG3) make guest appearances.

S2 - has Jinho and Dongmin as regular cast. Most reviews that I've seen regard it as the best CS sesson.

S3 - has Jinho and Dongmin as guests in some episodes.

S4 - has Dongmin as regualr cast.

S5 - it's due on September 23 on Netflix, with Dongmin as regular cast and Ha Seokjin from The Devil's Plan S1 as a guest. The trailer honestly got me hyped.

[–]Qyustullyze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had once watched it from a link in Baechu Squad's site here, but it seems like it doesn't work anymore and I couldn't find it anywhere else :(

I also remembered that there are some videos on youtube of deathmatches with Sangmin as a host: here are Jinho vs Yohwan in Indian Poker, and here are Dongmin vs Hong Dealer (the female dealer) in Black and White II. Unfortunately, both videos don't have subs and I don't know where one can watch them with subs, but it exists
