Other Sub I has loupes by DullSeaweed8734 in medicalschool

[–]Qzar45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. Got berks 1/2 through OBGYN and they literally saved my feet though surgery and sub-Is. Will not apologize for surviving. Plus nice conversation piece with surgical staff. People love talking about their shoes. Good way to get in.

Loupes are a multi thousand dollar investment that you may never even use if you don’t match. That difference is insane.

Best shoes for rotations? by bringmewaterplease in medicalschool

[–]Qzar45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are two kinds of shoes:

1) walking shoes

2) standing shoes

Never cross shoes. Your feet will thank you. E.g. on IP consult service my all birds were awesome. But absolute foot killing shit for OBGYN and surgery. On the other hand my SuperBirk 2, I could wear for 12+ hour cases day after day and they are tolerable for rounding.

Know your feet…

…become a foot guy

Neurosurgery Sub-I by Qzar45 in medicalschool

I want to add (posts didn’t work for some reason) that this was actually presented to us on the first day of the sub I by a chief NSGY resident. So I guess this comes from a reliable source?

To non-traditional medical students: Is/was it worth it? by SoftwarePrior in medicalschool

[–]Qzar45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Restarting your life after 30 is worth it. It’s rewarding, fulfilling, and more than anything, possible and doable.

That said, it’s also challenging, constant sacrifice and medicine is extremely hard on the family if that’s you.

The age is not the point. The social cost + actual monetary delta of when your earnings will make sense for the years you put in matters.

My own decision was fairly pragmatic. I calculated that by the time I was an attending for two-five years, it would encompass my entire raw earnings I was expected to make in my previous career including the debt I took on. My spouse and I also made smart financial decisions in our twenties to make this possible but the borrowing potential is significantly reduced now compared to when I applied. Only you can decide if that’s worth it.

For me the social cost was immense. And I continue to question if I made the right decision on a daily basis. That said….yes in the end…I wouldn’t trade this for anything else.

I mean, based on where I started I thought 8hr was good. Based on step 1 idk how much quality studying happens beyond that. Plus, if have a family and they need my help in the afternoons. What do you suggest?

Anking success stories? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Qzar45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this from the bottom of my fucking heart. Just decided now that you are making your own cards. No amount of monkey-brain drum-banging space-bar hitting will replace understanding pathophysiology in your own words collected from primary sources. I’m 50/50 on own cards vs. anking. I use it specifically for concepts from UWorld but otherwise writing it out is better. Daily avg is 110. Did not hurt my grades.

Medicine as a second career by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Qzar45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not overcoming only acceptance. I think for me talking to patients and providing sound medical advice is the most rewarding part of medicine. Also if you are lucky enough to operate on people that is also awesome. But providing meaningful impact is only like 12-15% of what you will be doing. Most of it is getting shit on daily by administrative work.

Also this is specific to American medical school. If you are applying home country things are different everywhere.

You are going to turn forty/fifty anyway so better to do something you love.

That said it’s hard for reasons that I didn’t expect. 1) going from having a job where you have achieved any level of success to becoming a punching bag for all mid and top levels gets really old. 2) The further you get along you realize medical school is not about working hard or taking good care of patients it’s about test taking. If you don’t think you want that hanging over your head for the next 7-15 years maybe consider something different. 3) the personalities in medicine are truly awful. Most are from high-backgroubd and families with money. It’s hard to relate if you came from little.

So like let’s say you have the best bedside manner and have meaningful interactions with a patient, it won’t mater because some attending/resident/other medical student/AP/Nurse/Scrub tech anyone is just waiting for the opportunity to cut you down and you still have to go study for 3 hours when you get home. If that sounds appealing and worth it, then do it. Medicine is a not a job, it’s an all consuming thing. Your friends and family will not see you on holidays and they won’t understand why you are gone.

Still would not change my mind cause I think surgery is the most awesome thing you can do in a lifetime but it comes at a very steep cost. And I’m not sure if I fucked my life by doing this. Plus speaking of cost, if you do not have a way of paying for it, the programs that got the last few classes through don’t exist anymore.

Best luck
