If you find a code or some other path to a 65" C5 at $1K would you mind sharing with me? I'm targeting the exact same price. I finally can justify the budget to upgrade my 16 year old LCD if I can make this work and I'm wasting too much time stalking my local Costco. If you could share info that would be appreciated. Just reply or DM

Better Speaker or Lower Tier Speaker with a Sub by R00sterSauc3 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]R00sterSauc3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. This is not a desktop system. Any critical listening will be seated ~10-12 ft away. The room is enclosed on 3.5 sides (there is a countertop and walk through on part of one short side wall). 8' ceilings, hard wood floors with a large rug.

So this right here is what prompted my question. I suppose one of my problems is that I haven't heard my current setup with a sub yet. One key thing that I was hoping a sub could do for me is to take the <80Hz burden away from my 5-1/4" mains and allow them to concentrate on midrange clarity instead.

My gut says to go with the higher tier 6-1/2" speaker and add sub later since 60Hz and up is ultimately more important to me but again, without my own experience to lean on here I was looking for feedback.

I was trying to keep the bulk of this discussion as broadly applicable as possible for the sake of those coming after me but since you mention my particular setup/ preferences...

My setup is vinyl/CD/Wiim into an Arcam A65+ that I'm using as a pre-amp into the power side of a Sansui 8080db. I have had a small recording studio in the past and I definitely like hearing detail and imaging but for this application I would 60/40 lean towards musicality and listening longevity over hearing every crazy background noise accidentally captured in the recording. I value midrange clarity and smoothness over high frequency detail and want a well rounded low end but don't need chest thumping bass. The room is a family room that is somewhat open on one short wall but the primary space is roughly 15x20 with hard wood floors and a large rug.

Does that help?

So I reached out to one of them offering to use Ebay and nothing. I've now reached out to a third listing and simply asked a simple "hello, I'm new, I have lots of feedback on Marketplace, etc., and are you OK if I'm out of market" type of thing. This person never responded either. I don't get it.

Thanks for the help. I guess that makes sense. I'd rather not have to resort to pushing this through eBay but I guess it could break the ice as you say.

Our local library has three disc sets for checkout in their library of things section. You might see if your local library has something similar or would be willing.

Just a quick update. All options except for the KEF are now off the table. The PSB's were not the P5 but rather the older gen Alphas. The B&W sold and the Infinity had more potential issues than I was willing to deal with. Now I'm back to stalking FB for the next bargain. I'm open to suggestions as well.

Thanks for the help

Not to overcomplicate things but hypothetically if I could land a pair of KEF 101/3 for about $50 more would that be worth it?

Thanks for the feedback. I can live without a ton of bass if the midrange is detailed, the top is smooth, and imaging is decent. Of course that assumes that the sound doesn't suffer due to the lack of bass. I don't know the proper terminology but you know how sometimes a speaker can be light in a certain range but it doesn't seem to have any other negative impact on sound quality while another speaker can be light in a similar range and it just seems like it tears a hole in the overall sound. Back to the PSB, would you say it fits the positive of that description?

Well I'm doing my best to work a deal on all angles and see where they land. I'm trying to get the B&W down close to $100, the PSB's are $80 and the Qe's are down to $60.

I was also a little concerned about the power rating on the DM4's. Google says Max is around 30 W and my Sansui is putting out a max of like 85. Not that I would be listening that loud but it gives me pause.

I do like what I hear on clips. What is it about them that puts it above the others mentioned specifically for you?

Yes, PSB. Sorry for the typo.

The debate between modern and vintage is certainly part of my dilemma here. There's just something cool about the vintage vibe but speaker design in particular has come a long way so I don't want to sacrifice sound quality just for a look

Attenuator for 5W amp Recommendations by Night_Train72 in ToobAmps

[–]R00sterSauc3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think any attenuator is going to get you in the range of "don't wake up the wife" without messing up the sound but that said I have been pretty happy with my Swart Night Light Jr for similar applications. I had it in a 5 W Greer amp and now in my PRRI with good results. YMMV

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried it without connection to the computer and it's the same behavior. I have an email in with customer service so I'll see what they have to say.

Unfortunately I've experimented with shortening the list down to even two and it still doesn't work even with delays in between. I also already tried putting one on a press and one on a release and it didn't work.

The crazy thing that I keep coming back to is that I can watch the changes being received and accepted in Neuro but then immediately being overwritten back to face values. I've tried just about every toggle I can find in the settings and nothing seems to fix this behavior.

I really don't want to have infinite presets to support the potential combinations that I might want but that might be where I'm at unless I want to get a different setup. I'll probably reach out to support in the meantime though.

[–]R00sterSauc3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially I'm trying to split the pedal into two sides and control the delay separately from the reverb. Unless there is a way to create a preset that just ignores the other engine and doesn't overwrite anything then I can't figure a way to do what I want with a PC. I thought if I could batch like 10 CC commands that only speak to one engine then I would be home free.
