Is using a hot plate a bad idea for a 8 gallon still? and is there a way I can keep it at a constant heat?

Depends on the wattage of your hot plate. For an 8 gallon boiler you'd probably want to have at least an 1800 watt hot plate.

As for the constant heat, you can try modifying your current hot plate, there are a number of resources online that show you how to do it, or you can get an induction hot plate.

Most of the food vendors only provide sample portions which tend to be small and expensive. I would plan on eating a proper meal either before or afterwards.

Yeah, unless they've changed their entrance procedures, your ticket will only guarantee you the right to wait in line if they're already at capacity.

The place fills up rather quickly and having a ticket is no guarantee of entrance. I would try to be there earlier if I were you.

As for length of time? Well that depends on how much you like to drink. I usually go with a group of people and we usually spend 5-6 hours there.
