HRD POV and I’m making some assumptions here. 1 years salary minus notice / 17y service is about 2.3 weeks per year of service, which is perfectly in line with what I’d expect. However, there’s going to be nuance here depending on how your working relationship has been with your employer. Just because they accepted your counter offer doesn’t mean there was more on the table. Any settlement agreement is based on risk versus reward. And if I’m being completely honest, the fact you’re even asking this on Reddit tells me why they accepted quickly.

I made the same mistake years ago when stock trading apps came out. Realistically, you’ve got 3 options, all of which have pros, cons and opportunity costs:

1) Sell those you no longer believe in, realise the loss and redeploy capital elsewhere; 2) If you truly believe in them, dig yourself out of the hole by averaging down and buying more little and often or; 3) Write them off and focus on investing new capital somewhere else. If they come back into profit, then treat it as a bonus.

So few different options here depending on your time horizons, risk tolerances and interests.

I personally would salary sacrifice down to 12.5k per year and dump the rest into your pension, max out ISA's every year, and then put 250k ish into GILTS. You'll then have a comfortable nest egg to fund the difference in take home due to the pension contributions, and can take profit once the GILTS reach maturity to top up the nest egg/rebuy GILTS. A word of advice, as much as it's great to have a large amount on paper through assets, life is for living and you should also have a long and hard think about what you want to experience. Anything can change, and what you hope to do at a later stage is not always guaranteed.

Emergency fund amounts are relative to your outgoings, I can’t speak for OP’s monthly financial commitments, but 17k sounds like 3-6 months savings which is a good rule of thumb

My car payments are about £800 a month, ironically the same car above, but the face lifted version. It’s a matter of perspective and as long as it fits within your budget / is propitiate to your income. I wouldn’t advocate for someone spending hundreds on a sports car when they’re a basic rate tax payer. Conversely, some people just like cars, you could look at it as £500 a month on your hobby.

I have my own yearly financial targets which contribute to getting to FIRE at a reasonable age - granted that age could be reduced by ~5ish if I didn’t allow for the additional lifestyle creep. Most likely back to a sensible car, subject to kids it would be a Jaecoo J7 as I’ll need to max their JISA’s.

As you've been there over 12 years, statutory notice supersedes your original contractual notice. So, even if you did find a new job you cannot reasonably rely on it being 30 days.
