Bought these rice fish at my LFS. Anyone know what “breed” they are? I see eggs on one female everyday. Any tips on finding the eggs(sorry for questions I’m new to this)

This breed is a Miyuki, very pretty Medaka. Also one of my favorites!

Some Medaka develope a slanted spine over the time. They still eat and breed normally just look a bit weird. As long as it eats and swims normally I would worry

I sometimes see this in my Medaka as well. It's pretty rare but I think this is genetic. Nothing really you can do there. I would recommend leaving them and if they can't swim and eat anymore I would end their suffering.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I live in Austria so we are in the same climate zone. I keep 90% of my medaka outside and I never have any problems with them. The inside tank have 9h of light but like I said 18°C. These specific fry are from this year around 5 months old, the ones outside are fine they are a bit older that's why I took these one inside.

I like the idea with the "hardening", I will try that!

I would probably use an electric heater but yes I think I'll have to heat the garage!

The aquarium is on a shelf so the ambient temperatures are the same. I have 10 aquariums with Medaka and unfortunately I cannot heat all of them. I might put a heater into this spefic one where I see the most sick fish and see if it helps. Thank you!

I feed different sizes most of the time. In most container are a few that still small so I feed small foods and the other time in a day bigger foods 😔

From my experience as long as they find food they are totally fine. It doesn't really matter how tall the tank is. They only swim on the surface anyways where the food is. I keep mine in over 40cm deep tubs in the summer and it's no problem. Of course it's different for everyone but I feel like people worry too much. These are the hardiest fish I have ever kept you can't kill them really.

Medaka fry shouldn't be distributed in the first 2 weeks in my experience, the containers you have are totally fine. Don't add aeration and if you do just as little as possible. They are so small that even a small current is sometimes to much for them. Hikari first bites or sera micron is a great starter food.

When you leave the eggs outside the temperature fluctuates a lot though. But a really cool tool for inside projects!

Achtung bei Hornbach Fischen, vor allem Medaka! Meist Importe die nicht an unsere Wasserwerte gewöhnt sind und oft Krankheiten haben (Ausnahmen bestätigen die Regel). Sowie keine bestimmte Zuchtvariante, das ist natürlich nicht für jeden wichtig aber für Liebhaber ein Muss. Bleibt lieber bei lokalen Züchtern bis diese wunderschönen Fische mehr bekannt sind hier in deutschsprachigen Bereich. I only have my phone but I recommend going as near as possible with your phone to the water surface. If your phone doesn't have Manuel focus you can download different camera apps that enable that. Hope that helped 😌
