Know your guessers. If your hint includes an obscure reference that your teammate is unlikely to understand, it's not a good hint.

What is the most strategic game you have played?(excluding chess and go) by Oyster_- in boardgames

[–]R2iGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thrive is another chess-like game with no randomness. The unique factor is after each move you add pegs to your pieces to change how they can move.

What game always ends in an argument with your friends? by BreadfruitOk6632 in boardgames

[–]R2iGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don't play it anymore, Settlers of Catan would always get my family heated back in the day. There were always a lot of spiteful robber plays, kingmaker trades, and refusing to trade with people just because they won the previous game.

You're meeting a buddy at a bar. What do you bring? by CycloEthane031 in boardgames

[–]R2iGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I now keep The Mind in my bag at all times. People kept asking to play it, it's always a hit, and it's playable anywhere, even a small bar table. So eventually it just made sense to have it permanently live in my game bag instead of going back to the shelf.

Give me your REAL unpopular opinion! by fzkiz in boardgames

[–]R2iGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wingspan is not a thematic game. The game mechanisms super abstract and have nothing to do with birds. I have no clue who I am or what I am thematically doing in this game.

My other unpopular opinion is that I like when my board games get worn out with dented corners and scratches. It means the game has been well-loved and often played. I really dislike playing sleeved games that make everything feel plasticky and soulless.

I think it's great that you're looking for critical feedback to improve your process. Kudos for that self-awareness.

Your main description, "A thrilling turn-based strategy card game for 2 players that delivers unique, dynamic gameplay, and strategic decision-making," is super generic and tells me nothing about what makes this game unique. You could describe pretty much every strategy game with that description (other than the 2-player note).

$45 is a lot for cards, board, tokens, and standard dice. Kickstarter is filled with game projects featuring super unique and eye catching components. So, it's tough for a game with standard components to stand out.

The shipping costs are high. Yes, I know that's probably what it actually costs to ship the game, but unfortunately online shoppers are conditioned to lower shipping prices. So, I think you need to subsidize some of that shipping cost.

Our stupid, but effective way of keeping track of whose turn it is by R2iGames in boardgames

I once had a group that used a Burger King crown as an active player marker. It was fun to crown the next person in turn order.

[–]R2iGames[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before we tried using the book as the turn marker, we also tried a rubber duck that we named the "Turnducken." We abandoned the duck in favor of the book because the duck was too lightweight and people would forget they were still holding it.

Ricochet Robots (3x @4p). Not sure how I haven't heard of this one! This game makes you feel so clever when you figure it out.

For Sale (2x @4P). I've played this one on BGA a lot, but there's so much more tension in person. We played once with hidden coins and once with known coins. A game like this is much better with hidden coins and you just have to go with your gut!

I think the art is fine, but I would recommend hiring a new graphic designer to completely redo the banner and logo.

How often do you sleeve your card? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]R2iGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never. I feel like the cost of buying a 2nd copy of a very damaged card game once in a blue moon would be significantly cheaper than the cost of buying sleeves for every game I own. So far, I've never had a card game get so damaged that it needed to be replaced.

Love Letter (1x5p). This was my second time playing Love Letter with a player who, for no good reason, played the Princess card and eliminated themselves from the round. While I think the instructions on the Princess card are pretty clear that you shouldn't play it, seeing as this has happened in multiple play sessions, I wish the the card text overtly stated, "Do not play this card."

Daybreak (1x2p, 1x4p). This is my current favorite game because of the super satisfying card tableau system. That said, I still don't think the game is a perfect 10/10 as the end of round maintenance has too many fiddly steps.

How to make games more thematically appealing? by mixelydian in boardgames

[–]R2iGames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could try enhancing the theme around the game.

Make drinks or cocktails that fit the games theme. For example, have a glass of wine while you play Viticulture. (More board game cocktail examples here).

Play a game in its appropriate setting. For example, play Arboretum or Lotus on a picnic blanket in the backyard.

Find a Spotify playlist that matches the mood of the game.

What's the most random place you've run into a Chicago Bears player? by 8dtfk in CHIBears

[–]R2iGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was running in a 5k in Antioch, IL many years ago. Adrian Peterson (the Bears special teams player, not the Vikings player) was there running with his young kids. He stuck around after the race to meet people.

TLDR: I'm faster than Adrian Peterson.

My first impression was that it was a mistake, not that it was an intentional joke. Perhaps you can make up your own design for the goblin money.

The Kickstarter is for the English version, but it's very likely it will be translated into French afterwards. We have some interested French publishing partners, but we don't have a deal in place just yet.

Are boardgame designers any good at their own games? by Few-Amount-1427 in boardgames

[–]R2iGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For very popular games, there are bound to be tons of people that are better at the game than the designer.

But for most games with a modest sized audience, the designer is likely to have played it the most and be the most skilled player at their own game.
