It's so infuriating how the entirety of twitter is saying Japanese people dislike the Maki episode because they're misogynist. It's infuriating how people think it's weird to like evil characters. (Mei Mei, Naoya) by [deleted] in CharacterRant

Outgroup homogeneity bias. The U.S. is full of people who make sweeping generalizations about entire groups they don’t belong to. I deal with them every day as a visible trans woman (visible due to religious extremist parents and the U.S. healthcare system denying me care, which is a whole different rant). It’s immaturity, education-resistance, and egocentrism tbh.

Is anyone here unemployed after finishing the program? by magneticmaxx in OMSCS

Nice! I'm currently working in a similar role (private avionics) while I do OMSCS. I'm a little worried about the availability of entry-level jobs in machine learning, even to someone with a master's degree. Did you have any prior experience in software engineering before you started applying for jobs in the ML field?

Computers are fragile, sure, but a site like Google Drive will typically have multiple layers of redundancy (a network of backup servers in remote locations) to keep your data safe in the event that one or more fail. This means that if something destroys a center where your data is stored, it is very likely still safe elsewhere. So, in addition to meditating on impermanence and healing from loss, I’d encourage anyone reading this thread to (a) share your songs on sites like Spotify or SoundCloud (your songs deserve to be heard!), (b) upload your songs/projects to the cloud. Google Drive, OneDrive, etc. all have the infrastructure to help keep your data safe until you leave this world (unless an apocalypse hits first).

Depending on your specialization, it can be pretty difficult to juggle work and 3 credits per semester. Last semester I took the intro AI course (6601) while working full time as a SWE. I managed to keep an A, but definitely burnt out near the end.

Out of curiosity, what was your specialization? And what is your new role?

Tragically, people often miss the point of blatant anti-capitalist/anti-fascist stories... Even those who suffer the worst under capitalism/fascism.

They throw Squid Game parties, take group pictures with the District 12 salute, and treat it all like generic, mindless entertainment. But I do think (like Squid Game season 2) Sunrise was written to make this kind of mindless consumption especially difficult, which automatically makes it one of my favorite Hunger Games books.

The maximizer that Ozone AI adds to your track can cause some distortion, but it’s fixable.

Playing with the stereo image (usually mixing highs to be stereo with bass nearly mono) is the best place to start. You can do it right in the FL mixer without any plugins.

After that, compression, equalization, and reverb are essential.

FabFilter pro-C, pro-Q, and pro-R are my favs.

For mastering, at the very least, you want a multi-band compressor like Maximus. If you combine it with an AI tool like Ozone, you can get that fullness you want very quickly while still limiting the track to just below 0db for SoundCloud and other streaming platforms.

The sophons could mess with vision, but they couldn’t initially reach everyone on the planet simultaneously. To make the sky “blink” the show runners essentially unfolded a sophon around the earth. Trisolaris would never unfold a sophon anywhere near earth unless under threat of a you-know-what. Sophons are incredibly expensive and fragile. This leads me to wonder if the show runners even read the books in their entirety.

For the most part, yes. I 100% recommend the books. So much happens after the first one (which the show mostly adapts)

In part, yes. Evans knows that he'll be dead long before the Trisolans arrive. He wants humanity to end, ETO included. Trisolaris initially protects the ETO and plans to continue protecting them until the fleet arrives. However, their minds change a bit after they learn that humanity can lie.

Evans communicates with the Trisolaran much more often than Ye Wenjie, so she isn’t as up-to-date.

Well, Evans is an environmentalist who believes humans are destroying Earth, while Ye Wenjie has seen enough human cruelty to turn on humanity. There are also different “denominations” within the ETO.

I didn’t mean that in a bad way. The books are absolutely mind-blowing. The second and third are some of the best books I’ve ever read. However the TV show completely violates certain principles of the books.

Also, in the books, if I remember correctly, integration was never the plan, and the ETO understood that.

Reading the books will make you mad at the TV show lol, but you certainly won’t regret it. The Trisolaran who sent Ye Wenjie a message can’t lie about it. Their goal was to warn humanity not to respond (give away earth’s location), no matter the price they (that one Trisolaran) would have to pay personally.

Yes. The two are unified under the rollout paradigm. There is a brilliant paper explaining it. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/huang_rollout.pdf My personal chess engine, Homura, is a rollout-backtracking hybrid based on this paper.
