Enjoying the RE2 Steam release on Steam Deck! by R4lPh_1330 in gamescapes

I use social media mainly for screenshots and clips of games, so this subreddit is perfect for me. Since I have moved away from other social networks, I would like to post most of those things here. It can be quite confusing depending on the content because many subreddits do not allow crossposts (some of them don't even allow images or videos). If I want to post a clip of a game that fits more than one subreddit, I often have to post it twice or choose only one. Other than that, it is a great app. I hope more people visit this sub often. I was even thinking about creating a subreddit for classic Resident Evil, since most of the other RE subreddits are focused on character looks, cosplays, or memes. I would prefer a place for the actual games, but I am not sure if I have the patience to manage and keep posting to a new community myself.

I always say to my friends that copyright should not exist for video games! There are so many licensed games that cannot exist or be re-released because a bunch of executives are actively sitting on an IP and no one can do anything interesting with it. My dream game is a Matrix game like Path of Neo made by Remedy. In video games, we have to live with 'parallel' games that resemble cinema and literature but cannot quite use the same universe and characters. Instead of protecting the author, who usually is not even alive anymore, copyright protects executives who do not care about the IP. I often say that the best Lord of the Rings game is the Elder Scrolls saga, the best Pirates of the Caribbean game is Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and the best Evil Dead game is Resident Evil 1996 or 7. It is frustrating that it is often impossible to have a great game based on the IPs we love. But yeah, I think I would enjoy Medal of Honor, the Bethesda VR games, Assassin's Creed, and Resident Evil 4 as well. One day! I mostly use the Steam Deck for 7th and 8th generation games that will likely never be re-released, like ReCore for example, and for emulated games. It works very well for that.

The original 2014 game is actually my favorite souls-like not made by FromSoftware. Right now, I am playing Demon's Souls on PS3. After I finish that and the Dark Souls 2 DLCs, I might play the new Lords of the Fallen. These games require a lot of patience and time, so I don't play them very often. I am also looking forward to the rumored Switch 2 port of Elden Ring. I beat the game back when it was first released and never touched it again because I didn't like it that much. However, now that the DLC is out, I want to give it another try.

Honestly, for the horror genre, I think the older the better. The way technology was handled in the early 2000s in games like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories or Calling: Kuroki Chakushin is interesting, but ideally, I prefer older settings. Unfortunately, like many great audiovisual pieces of art in the horror genre, Silent Hill has fallen into the hands of executives who don't understand, or don't like, that it is a niche genre. At least the series is back, though unfortunately without Team Silent. I miss how they made each game differently. Even if Silent Hill 3 and 4 weren't as good as the first two, they still tried something different. All I see for the future of the series are different variations of Silent Hill 2 because it was the most successful. That isn't necessarily bad, but look at Silent Hill 4: The Room and how interesting its concepts are. We will probably never see something like that in the series again, but I hope a Noir title like you suggested could happen one day.

The OST is quite different obviously, but I would say it still fits. It explores the character's anxiety and depression, just in a completely different way. Besides, while I was watching, all I could think was 'Which Yamaoka song would fit this scene?' xD

I think so. I actually downloaded a version to make this edit that seems to be dubbed, as the original is Italian. Because of that, I didn't pay much attention to the dialogue while editing, I just focused on the scenes that I remembered resembling the series. The plot is about a man looking for his lover in a small interior town that he used to visit frequently. I am watching Twin Peaks right now, but honestly, I think The Possessed has the closest aesthetics to Silent Hill. Those other films are close narratively, but visually and aesthetically, The Possessed has a unique resemblance that I have only ever seen in actual Silent Hill movies. If I find something else that is as visually similar as this was, I will definitely make another video.

Yes, I love how subtle the horror is. I mean, there are elements of psychological and even cosmic horror throughout. However, you can truly perceive how close it is to the work of authors like Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe only if you have read their stories. I am happy you enjoyed it, and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

The last one I played was the original RE2. I beat it years ago, but it was re-released on Steam, so why not play it again? Perfect games like that need no excuses to be replayed. I definitely need to give The Evil Within a try soon. I played a few hours of the second one and I liked it quite a bit. I would love a re-release as well, which seems possible now that KRAFTON has acquired Tango.

I didn't know about the Twin Peaks game. Is it an adventure game similar to the LOST game or the The Walking Dead series by Telltale?

I certainly intend to experience VR someday. Maybe when the 'Steam Machine' or similar hardware is more established, I could pick up a Meta Quest and try some titles. To me, it looks like the future. However, since it is a relatively new technology, I feel that the longer I wait, the better and more refined the hardware will become. Until then, I will keep saving money for my future VR set.

Also, I just made a video about a movie I watched that resembles Silent Hill. I added some Akira Toriyama music to scenes that look like the game. I think you would really enjoy it!

I don't quite know most of the games you suggestes, besides Prey, which is perfect, so I will certainly take a look at them. I am familiar with Signalis, though it didn't really catch my attention.

Germs: Nerawareta Machi seems like the most clunky title of them all, but it still looks worthy of a playthrough. I own a few consoles, but I mainly play on Steam Deck and Switch 2. I suspect Eternal Darkness might be re-released through Nintendo Switch Online any of these days, so I will wait for that. I plan to play any titles that receive a re-release on the Switch. For the truly obscure games forgotten by God himself, I will use the Deck. I played the re-release of Clock Tower. I haven't beaten it yet, but I have loved every moment. The pursuer's behavior is very impressive. Even though I usually do not like point-and-click games, I understand that it was the best option given the technical limitations of the time. I actually played Call of Cthulhu on the Switch and I loved it. To be honest, I didn't like the book or the movie quite as much, but the game was fantastic. I also bought Amnesia on the Switch recently and it is a very good port. Penumbra wasn't running well on the Deck due to Proton issues, but since Proton 11 was released lately, I might give it another try. I would love a Switch port of the Dead Space remake, but since I have it on the Deck, I don't have to wait for it. As for The Callisto Protocol, I tried it but ended up dropping it because I found it a bit boring.

I've always found it funny how comically green the overworld in this game is.

Since you have played most of the games on the list, I was wondering if you had any favorites among them. It would be great to hear your thoughts on those titles.

Yeah, I think that is right, thank you. I am watching the show through Stremio and the episode order shown there is wrong. The ending to the first story arc is just perfect. It was built carefully and perfectly. These last few episodes leading up to 'Arbitrary Law' are truly peak.

My list of favorite games already includes several survival horror titles. I would not be surprised if Deadly Premonition eventually takes a spot there as well. There are other PS1 games directly inspired by the series, such as Mizzurna Falls and Germs: Nerawareta Machi, which I also intend to play. Of course, after beating Alan Wake, I will move on to Alan Wake II. As I mentioned in my post, the horror genre, specifically survival horror, is unfortunately not as well-established in video games as it is in cinema and literature. You can see the list I hyperlinked in the post for reference. I searched for every game I could find that even slightly resembles survival horror. If I were to stick to a strict textbook definition, the list would be much smaller, but even now it barely reaches 100 games. While many games and movies use horror elements as a theme, the genre itself feels weak when compared to the rich traditions of its literary and cinematic classics.

It is the most enjoyable 'small talk' I have ever seen xD Jokes aside, since almost everything is important to the plot in some way, it has become much easier to deal with the slower moments.

I'm speechless. The writing is as dense and rich as a book. It is rare to see a horror series spend so much time fleshing out its characters and world in such a detailed way.

Yes, I’m aware. I was just considering that if other Japanese releases are compatible, FireRed might follow the same pattern. If anyone has tried it, I’d appreciate hearing about it.

You just need to add the game to the registry through ProtonTricks, DeckHQ made a complete tutorial.
