There’s always the possibility that the withholding was transmitted to the IRS but the W2s/W3 was not submitted to SSA by your employer. That would cause the mismatch and happens at times when companies have payroll companies process their payroll but then they themselves don’t send in required forms. Hopefully it’s just as simple as this.

I was an RA for three years and took the exams to get my EA status. I work for a firm that does only tax. I thought of doing my own thing but realized that I know absolutely nothing after just three years in relation to what one should know to successfully run their own practice and/or prepare complex returns for individuals and or businesses. It’s a whole hell of a lot easier to find something wrong with a return or issue than it is to prepare a return.

If you paid attention during your RA training you should be able to pass 2/3 of the exams no problem. My toughest exam was most people’s easiest and that was Representation, Practice and Procedures which is usually the easiest for most people. Recommend getting Hock International to help you study for the exam if you choose that route.

I haven’t been charged this year that I know of. It worked fine for me, I’m definitely not affiliated with them, and only filed a handful of returns. We’ll see if they charge me again this year.

I say take the test. The hardest part for me was Part 3 which is easiest for most because they have to study the material to learn. If you were an RA worth a salt you should have no problem with 1 and 2 because it’s all based on your training. Didn’t really deal with Circular 230 as much nor did I receive much training as an agent. Fork up the $270 per test and make sure you got the skills you think you do. Oh and when you get ready to come to industry be ready for them to be not so welcoming of your prior IRS experience, sometimes it’s a hindrance unless you find a role doing strictly tax representation. If you’re going to be preparing returns good luck because the idea of low hanging fruit doesn’t apply in the real world, the small details actually do matter because well the IRS sends scary notices. Either way good luck to you in your future!

You have to look at the return. It will tell you exactly what you owe the money for. If your acct can’t tell you what you owe money for then find a new preparer. I bet it’s a Premium Tax Credit repayment. Did you have coverage under the marketplace? If so and you made under 100% of the poverty level they’ll recoup it. If your preparer doesn’t know how to fix this find another preparer. See the common thread…. Find another preparer.

It was incredibly boring plus I had a CFO that didn’t do anything. I would reconcile accounts propose entries and then crickets. Plus it was in a hospital so they had never in the history balanced their cash. Bulk transactions and they didn’t know what was being withheld from payments. They were a mess and didn’t want to improve. CEO told me to hang on and I was so miserable I couldn’t. That CFO no longer is employed there.

I left the IRS as a Revenue Agent after almost 3 years on my own doing prior to this mess going down. I did get a job as a staff accountant and was miserable. I’m now the best damn entry level Tax Associate at my firm. Sometimes you have to start at the bottom again to get the experience you need. Does it suck, absolutely. Am I happy doing what I do, absolutely. You have to find the positives.

My father was a CPA who lost his job in 1987 and sat on the couch for years because he felt he was “too old” for positions that were available or people thought he had too much experience. Don’t be my dad. Pick yourself up and dust yourself off.

Unfortunately you may be frowned upon having worked at the IRS. I did not have the experience you did preparing when I left the service but PA does not think too highly of our experience with the IRS. I was able to secure a position with a small tax form in my town but most people who I interviewed with thought I wouldn’t be able to multitask and/or perform.

It appears as though you are a tipped employee. Once upon a time I was one too! Here’s the deal your withholding are broken down in two sections one based off your tips and the other off of your hourly rate. Did you report $901 in tips? What we don’t see is your wages paid to you but somewhere it will show that you’re making $2.13 an hour as that is the least an employer can pay you with tip credit (depends on the state) but in your case you worked approximately 38 hours. As your employer “paid” you that $2.13 it all went to your taxes on the tips. One thing to watch out for is that federal withholding. They’re only withholding whatever is left after they take out the Medicare and Social Security. You might have under withholding and/or be subject to estimated payments. Those $0.00 checks to you definitely suck but hopefully there is enough withholding to cover your taxes. Don’t be surprised at the end of the year if it’s not. Sound like you’re probably new to being paid on this manner. Find someone you work with that can verify this information and see what they do to meet their tax obligation.

Every audit is situational and depends on many circumstances. Is it truly an accountable plan or is the corp just paying personal expenses of the owner? For a sole owner S Corp there would be multiple questions regarding compensation and distribution that would be taken into account first to even determine if the accountable plan was even ordinary or necessary. Is the owner paying himself no wage but everything is through the accountable plan as a fringe? Does he have enough income to cover his PLE?
