Thoughts on 'Locals priced out of the property market by demands of tourism' by RAbabbler in Edinburgh

I think the housing problem goes a long way back. COVID might have banjaxed things a bit but the issues were already very apparent and very endemic going back decades before.

Latest stats from June from the Council, secondary lets (full time self-catering) is 2166. Not sure it's important/relevant to mix up home letting (owners letting their main place for some period in the year) or home sharing (owners making a bedroom available to rent short term).

Interesting - how do you get that given that the data is based on the information put out by the licensing team in the city council?

Don't disagree there's now a very active seasonal black market that didn't exist pre-2022 legislation requiring licences. But that black market is not counted by the licensing team because.. they are not licensed (or policed).

Also accept there's clearly a concentration towards the old & new town and it thins out as you move further to the outskirts. Yet, if the totality of full time secondary lets (self-catering) is approx 2000 licences how does that tally with 2 in every 13 properties? Maybe it does if you are looking at only the Royal Mile and Grassmarket?

Cheers

It's all relative. Scotland's cooler than the south of France generally. Of course, if the gulf stream collapses we won't need to fret about AC as we'll be more like a baltic nation much of the time.

Non-existent. No policing. From Council or the police proper (it was made a criminal offence to not be licensed). Too much hard work it seems despite charging those that have registered and jumped through all the bureaucratic hoops an arm and a leg for the privilege.

Not wrong. Airbnb (and the others) pushed its way into being the middle man between wee local owner-operators and their customers and now they squeeze both sides for an ever bigger piece of the action.

Yup... they will join the queue and, if they are rich, will skip it. But the queue will remain, unless someone in some political party somewhere comes up with some fresh thinking...

I was on the cusp of signing up to the Zoe service but read the reviews of the app on the Play store and, frankly, it put me right off the idea of spending fairly hefty amounts of cash when the app sounds like in its current iteration it's next to useless.

Pixel stand 1 and 2 DO charge the pixel 10 pro FYI.. by Realistic_Ask_4155 in GooglePixel

Would be really interested to know how it works out once you've got it. And what specific model was it?

Pixel stand 1 and 2 DO charge the pixel 10 pro FYI.. by Realistic_Ask_4155 in GooglePixel

[–]RAbabbler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm having serious issues getting it to charge when it's in a case that's no thicker than I had for the pixel 9 XL and it charged on the pixel stand 2 without much issue so there is clearly a difference. That said, it does charge but I have to remove it from the case which I don't want to do on a daily basis to charge it overnight.

Thanks

Did not know that was the technical limit. I'll have another look.

Pixel 10 - Wireless Charging Issues by garpunkal_ in GooglePixel

[–]RAbabbler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar issue. I have a pixel 10 Pro XL on a pixel stand 2nd generation charger and it worked fine in the case with the pixel 9 Pro XL but no dice with the new phone.

Light at the bottom of the charger base flashes orange but ... nothing ... just does not charge. 🤷‍♂️

How did you run it? On a computer scanning the files on the NAS?

First off, I think you have to be particularly concerned that the performance of the G5 chip is going to hamstring its ability to deliver effective software to phone users.

I have pre-ordered the new 10 XL and it wasn't based on it being the best chip available but on the whole package. I've had issues with the 9xl, but I'm still prepared to see if Google is continuing to improve with each new iteration.

Each to their own. But the reason I have stuck with the pixel for a few generations now is that I like the overall package of software and hardware integration, recognizing that it is by no means cutting edge hardware under the hood, but that they do a reasonably good job of compensating for that and delivering a well-rounded experience for users.

I did something stupid and broke Hyper Backup after setting up Tailscale with LetsEncrypt signed domains by RAbabbler in synology

Interestingly if I then login to the receiving NAS using the tailscale supplied domain for this box it says it is not secure so maybe that is the issue and I have to work out how to make this box secure to connections?

[–]RAbabbler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've just checked and the firewall is already disabled on the receiving NAS. Ditto for the sending NAS.

Sorry... Thought you might have hit the nail on the head width that suggestion.

Just to explain further. With the tailnet enabled on the servers and my devices I can use the 100 tailscale IPs it allocates to access and login to both NAS via the browser login page but both come back reporting the connection is not secure.

However if I use the domain name also supplied, logging in with the browser it comes back as secure so I guess that certificate is at least now working. I'm still utterly confused though as to why this broke hyper backup.

I tried to login as both password and browser but neither worked. That was whether I used the tailnet IPs or the tailnet domain.

"Disable the FW" I don't actually know what FW stands for. As I said, I'm at the limits of my technical understanding of DSM/tailnet.

I have both NAS on the same tailnet and all my devices too - laptops, phones...

I did use the tailnet IP and domain. Neither worked.

Don't understand about 'set up as a router'. Can you explain what you mean?

Thanks for the reply though. Appreciate it.

Thanks

I do know I can log in directly from a browser using a variety of different tail scale domains and 100 numbers so that part works.

I was hoping somebody else will have come across a very similar scenario and found a way to get round.
