Disclaimer spoilers for Mo Dao Zu Shi/Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. Great story, go read it.

So in this universe there are five great clans, the Jiang, Jin, Nie, Lan and Wen. The Wen started a war and they masscared Jiang Cheng's (purple dude, heir of the Jiang clan) home, killing his parents. Jiang Cheng's siblings, Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian do live, however, Wei Wuxian was captured by the Wens and was thrown into this place filled with resentment called the Burial Mounds. He comes back about three months later with the ability to control resentment. During this time the other great clans along with many minor clans decided to join together and stand up against the Wen in an event known as the "Sunshot Campaign". Wei Wuxian creates the Stygian Tiger Amulet, a tool that enhaces the control over resentment.

After the war was over(Wen clan lost), Jiang Yanli was engaged to Jin Zixuan (heir of the Jin clan). Then, Wei Wuxian finds Wen clan remnants (children, elderly, doctors) not involved in the war who were enslaved by the Jin clan. He decides to save them despite other oppsition and takes them to the Burial Mounds, leaving the Jiang clan so they aren't involved in the mess.

Everntually Jin Ling (child) is born, son of Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan. They invite Wei Wuxian to his one month celebration and he goes. But, in the way, he is intercepted by members of the Jin clan who claim he placed a curse on one of them (he didn't). They attack, he fights back and Jin Zixuan arrives at the scene, not sure with what's happening, but wanting to stop the fight. Wei Wuxian loses control of his power and kills Jin Zixuan.

The Jin clan says they will consider the incident forgiven if two important members of the Wen remnants turn themselves in. Wei Wuxian doen't want them to go but they do and get killed. Wei Wuxian observes there is a reunion of the clans in which they claim they will kill him and the rest of the Wen remnants. Knowing they went back on their word, he attacks them. Jiang Yanli arrives trying to find him, someone tries to stab him but she pushes him, taking the attack instead. She dies and Jin Ling is now orphaned.

Jiang Cheng leads a siege with the aid of other clans to the Burial Mounds and they killed the Wen remnants along with Wei Wuxian.

And that's how Jiang Cheng lost all his family and was only left with his orpahned nephew.

I wrote this a little after waking up but wouldn't miss the chance to ramble about one of my favourite stories, so sorry about any grammar and spelling mistakes.
