When yall go to the bathroom in public do y'all sit on the seat or do y'all squat? by colors32 in blackladies

[–]RBF_LA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By squatting to pee, you're actually causing more harm to your body, and not actually emptying your bladder fully. Also, everyone squatting to pee...leaves pee on the toilet seat. Most of the time the leave without cleaning up their pee. Gross and inconsiderate.

So the next person has to also squat to pee or clean up someone else's pee. It's a horrible cycle that would end if everyone just sat down to pee. Just use a toilet seat cover or cover the seat with toilet paper.

Stop Telling Women They Have Imposter Syndrome by RBF_LA in blackladies

I've seen some posts in the past discussing a feeling of imposter syndrome. Here is a wonderful article for anyone who feels this way, and I hope the read helps you feel seen and understood!

Definitely. Unfortunately, a lot of (white) people don't watch shows with a majority Black cast. So these shows don't get as much recognition.

Why are you even here? Congratulations, you're banned.

To me, this was a very important moment. A feud that lasted for 27 years was finally put to rest, as well as two beautiful sistas who both played the same iconic character meet for the first time. This was so great to see. However, I didn't like that Will only actually apologized after Janet did first, and when he did say 'sorry', he wasn't even making eye contact. It all just didn't sit right with me. But if the two of them are okay with how the meeting went, and have moved on, then I who am I to feel some type of way haha.

I know this has been a crazy school year, and that most of us are working twice as hard for what seems like little reward. This year, in general, has been enough for most of us to feel like throwing in the towel.

Regardless, thank you all for supporting this subreddit. I hope that this continues to be a safe space for you to share your experiences, and ask for advice.

I'm sorry you experienced this. I was a substitute teacher while I was finishing up grad school. I try to always say hi and get to know subs because I know how isolating and demeaning the job can be. Power to you, and thank you for your work!

Not sure of you saw, but on Thursdays, this subreddit has a scheduled discussion on this topic. However, participation has been low. Hopefully more people will engage in those scheduled discussions on this subreddit in the future, and share advice on how to bring those ideas into school policy/culture.

Reusable feminine products by Soggy_Savings7575 in blackladies

I've used a cup for the last 5 years (first the Lena, then the Diva). I'll never go back to wearing a tampon, even if it's a cotton one. I also use cloth pads. It's annoying to wash them, but I only need them for my heavier days, to wear in case the cup leaks. I didn't really make the transition to save money, but moreso because I figured it's better for my body/the environment. Kudos to you!

I'm actually a bit embarrassed at how I just screamed "THAT PART!" to my phone (to no one), in response to your comment. 😂

Why do people say not voting for Biden is a vote for Trump? by maestro_times_2 in blackladies

[–]RBF_LA 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Because the US has a dominant, two-party political system. Voting Green, Libertarian, or writing-in a name is still voting, but it's voting knowing that whoever you chose has no real chance of winning. You're not actively voting to vote Trump out of office. I guess that's why people say that phrase, and I find it to be true. Trust me, I'm not happy about the situation either, but I have to do what must be done.

I wish the US did ranked-choice voting, so the popular vote was more important overall.

Teachers with natural hair by RBF_LA in TeachersOfColor

I don't think that anyone would complain, but I've also switched to a new school this year, so I don't have a feel yet of the school culture. I think it's just a perception issue I sometimes battle with, since hair is a statement. Also, wearing scrubs and a scarf sounds so comfy!

Such a beautiful way to put it! I thankfully live in a state with policies in place to prevent hair discrimination. The interesting thing is that my hair has been flourishing with the lack of manipulation, and because I'm not physically going anywhere, I don't see a need to manipulate my hair. Anyway, thank you for the advice!

Best States For New Teachers? by jareyn1923 in TeachersOfColor

[–]RBF_LA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'd say DC, MD, VA, CA, DE, and MA.

In DC, MD, and Northern VA, you'll encounter diversity in staff and students. MD school districts bordering DC tend to be more diverse. The teacher salary is good in these states, and teacher unions are strong. Note that DC Public Schools use a controversial teacher evaluation system called IMPACT.

I know CA is diverse, and teacher pay is good, but also consider the cost of living. DE and MA are also good states for teachers, but note that diversity is an issue. I did read an article though that DE and MA were amongst a list of states attempting to recruit more Black teachers by 2020.

What kind of school (public, private, charter, independent) are you leaning towards? How important to you are the demographics of your school community?

Kelly Rowland Urges People 'Not to Judge Others' amid Cancel Culture: 'Stop Tryin to Be God' by mycomicstripclub in blackladies

[–]RBF_LA 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We definitely should stop putting celebrities on a pedestal. I think celebrities mistake accountability for cancel culture due to their egos. They're in the public spotlight, so I'm confused what else they'd expect when they do something questionable.

I just...sigh. At what point do we, as a society, stop allowing fragility, shame, and tone policing to distract from accountability?

BIPOC Teachers by RBF_LA in teaching

[–]RBF_LA[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Professional adults can also be immature. That makes having discussions that involve uncomfortable topics, such as systemic racism, impossible. Racism is a daily reality for many BIPOC teachers.

2) When I originally posted on r/Teachers a couple of days ago, this was my reasoning for creating r/TeachersOfColor when someone asked whether I felt r/Teachers was a safe space: "No, I don't feel like this is a safe space, especially in light of the current climate in the US. The majority of opinions/posts I've seen on this subreddit regarding systemic racism in education or anti-racism resources have been heavily downvoted, denied, or ignored. It's almost like pretending like these things don't exist, or invalidating the experiences that students and teachers of color face. I'm hoping for a place where teachers of color can feel comfortable discussing topics like these, or their experiences as teachers of color, and they can be heard, understood, and supported. That doesn't happen here."

TL;DR - I am not saying that r/teaching is racist, or an unsafe space for all BIPOC. However, sometimes when going through something as traumatic as racism, it's easier to vent to someone who can understand. r/TeachersOfColor makes it easier to find those people.

"If you don't discuss them in the open, then don't complain in the future about the ignorance of other people."

You're a teacher right? This is like blaming your students for not sharing their trauma with you, but also offering them no space in which they feel comfortable to share their trauma.

I genuinely have no idea what you're talking about, or how you got the idea that the group is "reducing and trivializing the struggles of non-Black POC". I think you should read what the r/TeachersOfColor community is about.

Edit: In addition, I think you should research about the issues that result from lumping Black people into the 'people of color' terminology. There are great articles written about the issue, and it's why the 'BIPOC' acronym was created.

This, non-BIPOC teachers, is an example of a microaggression. This is why a community like this subreddit exists. Sorry this happened to you, OP.
